Soft underfoot conditions and a stiff wind meant challenging conditions for today's Munster Cross Country Championships in Tipperary. St Mary's had a successful outing with Munster level debuts made, strong performances in high level competition, individual medals and team medals the story of the day.
Chloe Thompson was first to the start line and she ran bravely to finish well up the huge field of almost 200 athletes in the GU10 race! Chloe is still in her first season of athletics and showed impressive courage to enter a race at this level as well as running strongly, undeterred by the massive entry and the challenging conditions 👏
Next up was Neasa Cluney who always revels in a tough race. Neasa ran strongly over the testing GU16 4KM course and finished well up the high quality field 💪
The boys U16 Race had lots of St Mary's interest with 4 of our boys competing over the 4KM. We had 2 individual medallists in the Top 12, Hayden Scadding in 7th closely followed by Liam Walsh in 11th place. The club team comprised of Hayden and Liam along with Richard Melbourne and Oran Morrissey finished a hugely creditable 4th overall.
Hayden, Liam and Richard added to the medal haul by being part of the Waterford County team who finished 3rd overall, well done boys!

Day 2 of Waterford County Cross Country Championships took place in a not so sunny Tramore yesterday. We had athletes competing in the GU9, GU11 and BU17 races on the day and all put in huge efforts to finish well up the field. Well done everyone who represented us 👏 👏

Three of our athletes were in action today at the Munster Schools Indoor Combined Events in Nenagh.
Quinlan Hennessy (Waterpark College) took 7th place in a very competitive 1st Year Boys Quadrathlon, setting 3 PBs in the 4 events on the day. A great start to Quinlans year as he just settles into his preseason training 👏
Tadgh Forristal (Waterpark College) made his debut in Combined Events competition and competed strongly in the Junior Boys Pentathlon event. A great debut for Tadgh!!
Lastly the ever energetic Declan Vandi (Newtown School) finished in 7th place in the Inter Boys Pentathlon, running strongly in his favoured 200m and showcasing his talents over some of the less familiar events! Well done Declan

Weekend Round Up from St Mary's AC activities!
Lauren McGhee and Roisin Mongey headed to the Munster Development Squad Throws session in Templemore on Saturday in glorious sunshine and worked hard, honing their skills in both Hammer and Discus as their pre season kicks off.
It was Day 1 of the County Cross Country Championships in Dungarvan on Sunday and a small crew of our athletes made the trip up. Again, blessed with Autumn sunshine, all performed admirably from Chloe, our debutante, right up to the well seasoned U16s.
Holly Everett and Chloe Thompson both had great runs finishing well up the field in the GU10 race, well done girls!!
Bobby Everett was our sole competitor in the BU14 race and he ran solidly all the way to the line 👏. Next up was Neasa Cluney in the GU16 race and she was well placed in her first race of the season, well done Neasa!
Last race of the day was the BU16 and St Mary's took home the individual silver and bronze medals through Hayden Scadding and Liam Walsh as well as the team gold medal with Hayden and Liam being joined by Declan Vandi and Richard Melbourne on the podium.
A great day out for the athletes and a huge thank you to the coaches and parents who supported them all day 👏
Next up will be Day 2 of the County Cross Country Championships for the Uneven Age groups.

Waterford Primary Schools Cross Country took place at the RSC today and St Mary's athletes were to be seen in action across all the age groups representing their respective schools. Well done to all who competed, to all who medalled and to all our supporters who were there to join in the fun! Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday during the school term!

Spikes and singlets were dusted off after the summer break today in glorious sunshine at the St Senans AC Open Cross Country event. St Mary's had several eager athletes take to the line and all performed admirably.
Well done to Sophia Ryan, Layla Kariveda, Holly Everett, Bobby Everett, Hayden Scadding and Liam Walsh on a great day's work. Liam and Hayden topped the podium in the BU16 race 👏👏
A great event to lay the foundations for the XC season ahead where no doubt there will be a lot less sunshine and a little more mud to contend with!

SUMMER CATCH UP PART 2!
St Mary's was well represented at the European Championships Unity 1km Road Race! Taking place after the Marathon events, the streets of Birmingham were thronged with eager young athletes who ran 1 kilometre of the official European Championships Marathon route, ending at the main finish line, under the cameras! All were rewarded with loud cheers from the huge Irish contingent over for the European Championships and a special, once off commemorative medal to mark the occasion. 🏅

A really enjoyable event with an amazing atmosphere, well done to the coaches who finished in style too but a little way behind the youngsters!

SUMMER CATCH UP!
We've been a little quiet on here as competition season ended and most of the club took a well earned break to enjoy the sunshine and lack of routine.
A little catch up on events - Liam Walsh represented us in the Run with Ciara Mageean which took place at the National Senior Championships back in July. A proud moment for those watching from the stands and on the TV to see our singlet represented in honouring someone who is a huge role model to lots of us.
Liam took full advantage of the trip to capture a few snaps with some of his heroes- little did he know just how much more he would treasure the Andrew Coscoran one a few weeks later as he took home a European bronze medal!!!!!
Nichola Tighe represented us at the National Masters Championships in early August and took home a silver medal in the O50 WFD and a bronze medal in the 050 sprint hurdles 👏 👏
The Ballygunner Junior Park Run also continues every Sunday morning in Ballygunner Hurling Club with involvement from St Mary's coaches, athletes and parents 🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️

The last Track and Field competition weekend of 2026 took place last Saturday and Sunday with St Mary's members in action in both Belfast and Templemore.
Declan Vandi had a fine run in the Boys 400m at the SIAB International event in Belfast taking 5th place and also anchoring the Ireland 4x400m relay to the silver medal. Looking well at home in the green vest, it was a great finale to what has been a great season for him with hopefully even more to come in 2027 👏
The Munster B Championships took place in Templemore on Sunday with Hayden Scadding taking gold in the BU16 800m. Silver medals were won by Liam Walsh in the BU16 800m (PB), Finn Ryan in the BU11 Turbo Javelin (PB) and Roisin Mongey in the GU16 Shot. Tadgh Forristal took home his second bronze medal in as many weeks in the BU15 100m (PB). Chloe Sheahan came heartbreakingly close to a medal, being pipped for both the silver and bronze medals by just 4cm. She will be back!
And that's a wrap from a busy and hugely enjoyable, successful track and field season for St Mary's! Lots of high points, some disappointments, endless PBs and hopefully lots of young athletes looking back on their achievements with great pride! Next stop is Cross Country season where the sun will be but a distant memory!
