HWH Bunclody Hosts First-Ever 'Gaelic for Mothers and Others' Blitz in Glorious Sunshine
In a celebration of community, sport, and sunshine, HWH Bunclody proudly hosted its inaugural Gaelic for Mothers and Others (G4M&O) blitz on Saturday, July 5th. The event marked a significant milestone for the club and was officially opened by local councillor Barbara Anne Murphy, a longstanding supporter of women’s Gaelic football in the area.
Councillor Murphy, who played a key role in the formation of the LGFA in HWH Bunclody alongside Marianne Jackman and Jennifer Byrne back in 2003, expressed her delight at how the club has grown over the years. “It’s wonderful to see how far things have come,” she said, “and particularly heartening to witness the inclusion and success of Gaelic for Mothers and Others.”
The G4M&O team in HWH Bunclody was founded in March 2022 by then-chairperson Joe Murphy, and has gone from strength to strength. The ethos of the initiative – fun, friendship, and family – was clearly on display throughout the day. Teams travelled from far and wide, bringing with them colour, energy, and plenty of humour. Fancy dress, singing, dancing, and laughter accompanied the competitive action on the pitch, where spirited matches were played with heart and humour.
Referees Jamie Farrell, Padraic Byrne, Aidan O’Brien, Mag Doherty, and Niall O’Callaghan added to the festive spirit, ensuring the games ran smoothly – with the occasional tongue-in-cheek red card or free against a spouse drawing plenty of laughs from the sidelines.
The blitz welcomed teams from across the country, including Kildavin-Clonegal, Ballon, Gorey, Crossabeg-Ballymurn, Aughrim, Athy, Rheban (Kildare), Borris-Kilcotton (Laois) and Clonakenny (Tipperary). The pitch was alive with activity all day, with DJ Liam Sharkey keeping children and adults alike entertained with music and good humour.
Off the field, the BBQ and an ice cream truck proved hugely popular, especially under the clear blue skies. Every team member also received a pair of county socks, generously provided by Cobi Sports, adding a personalised touch to the day.
The event would not have been possible without the generous support of local businesses, volunteers, and the tireless work of the HWH Bunclody GAA committee, whose exceptional facilities drew praise from visitors throughout the day.
Sincere thanks are extended to all the teams, supporters, and volunteers who contributed to the success of the blitz – from setting up pitches to preparing refreshments and cheering from the sidelines. The day was a resounding success, and a testament to the spirit of community that lies at the heart of Gaelic games.
