American actress Uma Thurman spent large parts of her childhood at Crank's Ridge, Almora.

Uma was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Robert Alexander Farrar Thurman, a New York-born professor, is a Buddhist writer and academic.

Her mother, Nena von Schlebrügge, was a model who was born in Mexico City, Mexico, of German, Swedish and Danish descent.

During her childhood, Thurman and her siblings spent time in the Himalayan town of Almora, Uttarakhand, India, where the Dalai Lama, to whom Robert Thurman has long been close, once visited their home.

She grew up mostly in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she went to Amherst Regional Middle School, then moved to Woodstock, New York.

While her father gave his children a Buddhist upbringing, she has one of the Hindu goddess Parvati's alternative names, "Uma", which means "light" in Sanskrit.

Our trek begins in the Kumaon region of Almora which was the first British hill station (1815) in Uttarakhand, in the western Himalaya. Kumaon lies at the feet of some of the tallest mountains in India; Nanda Devi 7816m, Kamet 7756m, Trishul 7120m, Nanda Kot 6860m and the Panch Chuli 6903m.

The snow on Nanda Devi just happens to be the icing on our cake!
Exchange the noisy crowds of the usual 'Incredible India' haunts for something akin to pure bliss. Peace, serenity and a far simpler way of life where nature wraps her arms around you and you wish she would never let you go... We welcome you to our Kumaon village trek.

"The trek was a wonderful experience and a chance to see village life, unchanged in centuries. The scenery was stunning – from the green & gold terraced fields to the tall cedar forests. I loved learning how to make chapatis and puris at the last village and enjoyed the relaxed visits to the chai houses and the lovely old temple in the middle of nowhere. Anand was a fantastic guide with a real passion for the region and appreciation of nature. The porters were very nice & friendly. We must also mention how great the food was – we loved it!

"Fascinating insight into the Kumaon way of life in this beautiful region. We particularly enjoyed our first night staying in the village, feeling part of village life and the warm welcome on our return to Kalmatia Sangam. It felt like three holidays in one!"

"The trek was a wonderful blend of gentle exercise, experiencing the beauty of the lush forests of the Himalayan foothills, awakening the soul with the views of the heavenly peaks all combined with the time to read, relax, chat with our guide and porters and eat the wonderful local food. As well as interacting with the people that live there. The people are universally lovely! No begging at all. Very different from trekking else-where. Anand (guide) was the best! All of this not to mention the glory of being here at Kalmatia Sangam! Eating on the balcony – barely able to breathe with the sight of the mountains!!!

The “home-stay” was a private village stay. The 'apartment' being an upper floor of a traditional Kumaoni house, which were both rustic and comfortable. We were served our meals in our sitting room (we had a separate bedroom) or on the outside verandah.

The food all from local producers was beautifully, but simply prepared – just what we were hoping for in India. Whether we were inside or outside the views were incomparable. Forgot to mention the pre-walk and post walk chai. Oh, how wonderful!

Good job!! We loved it!! Hope the rest of our time in India lives up to our experience here.

Trek was excellent. Just the right difficulty. Fascinating view of village / rural life. Our guide was very knowledgeable and porters very nice.

Stunning trek with incredibly helpful guides. The length of the walks was well judged in these temperatures and the lead guide paces his guests expertly. His knowledge of the flora and fauna was excellent, as was his English. The village houses were beautifully positioned with stunning views.
