ASPIRING LEADERS MUST BE COACHABLE LIKE ARJUNA!!!

Making it to the top echelons of an organization, and becoming part of the leadership team can seem pretty glamorous. It’s a sign of accomplishment.

However, there is one secret. It is that, almost all leaders have been coached. Every leader also knows that learning and being coached never stops.

In fact, at the top level, the need to learn is more intense than ever. That’s why almost all organizational leaders have coaches, and it’s imperative that as an aspiring leader one must be coachable and foster a lifelong learning mindset.

Being coachable is positively related to important outcomes, such as the innovativeness at work and the overall performance.

Aspiring leaders must not pretend that they are coachable. Coaches want authenticity and will know if you are just trying to fake it.

Aspiring leaders must do everything that they can, to build a valuable and meaningful relationship with coaches.

A fine example of coaching, is found in the Mahabharata, wherein Lord Krishna coaches Arjuna.

The coaching of Arjuna by Krishna starts like this: The setting is the battlefield at Kurukshetra. The Pandavas and the Kauravas armies have taken positions. War is about to begin.

Arjunas dilemma is “To fight or not to fight?”

Arjuna is in a quagmire like situation of a potentially fratricidal war, and must choose between either killing his own cousins, who fill the enemy ranks or to give up arms, face defeat.

In this state of utter despair, Arjuna slumps in his chariot and turns to his charioteer and friend, Krishna, for counsel.

Thus, begins what is perhaps the longest coaching conversation in history – 700 verses of dialogue, called The Bhagavad Gita, which is the philosophical core of Mahabharata.

Arjuna’s dilemma is not ancient or uncommon. This confusion and despair are felt by the brightest of the entrepreneurs. There are plenty of situations in our modern lives where we need the help in the form of a fresh perspective from another person to make sense, cope with situations, make decisions, and bring out the best in ourselves.

The coaching by Lord Krishna gives a fresh perspective to Arjuna, and the attitude by both of them to request for coaching and to coach, is very crucial and important.

Archimedes, the genius Greek Mathematician, imagined the extraordinary utilization of the power of a lever and fulcrum.

Archimedes, postulated that a long enough lever, if propped on an appropriately positioned fulcrum, could transform even the feeble force exerted by a human being, could raise boulders and even move our planet Earth!!!

An alternate way of defining employee training is that “appropriate training enables the trainee to become a worthy resource, generating an extremely higher order of yield”.

The key factor to note is that the leaders must learn to create the lever, and identify the fulcrum, so that extra-ordinary higher yields are realised.

To identify these levers and utilize them, leaders need to think creatively and innovate.
