Firstly Because he wore glasses and owned a silky, textbook cover drive, history filed him away as a polite, classical accumulator. The data tells a completely different story however, Zaheer was a pioneer of aggressive white-ball batting, decades before the term existed. Across 62 ODIs from 1974 to 1985, he struck at 84.80, and among every player on earth with 1,000-plus ODI runs in that window, only two scored faster: Viv Richards and Kapil Dev. The quiet man in spectacles, dismantling attacks while looking like he was writing calligraphy. His peak ICC rating of 931 remains the second-highest in the history of ODI batting, and it was earned through aggression nobody bothered to notice.
However his second and maddest record lives in the first-class game, beyond even the 100 hundreds everyone quotes. Four separate times, Zaheer scored a double century in the first innings and a century in the second innings of the same match. Now the freakish part is that across all eight of those innings, he was never dismissed. Like Not once. Eight monumental innings, eight not-outs, No batsman in the sport's history, (yes, not Bradman, not Lara, not Tendulkar) has managed that double even once with both innings unbeaten. Zaheer did it four times.
They called him the Asian Bradman for the run mountain. The truth is in his own particular corners of the record book, even Bradman never went where Zaheer Abbas lived. Happy birthday, legend.
