''कथक शब्‍द की उत्‍पत्ति हुई कथा शब्‍द से , जिसका अर्थ होता है 'कहानी' और जो कथा कहे वो कहलाये कथक। इसलिए कथक शब्द का अर्थ, कथा को नृत्य रूप से कथन करना है। यह उत्तर भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्य है। यह बहुत प्राचीन शैली है क्योंकि महाभारत में भी कथक का वर्णन है। मध्य काल में इसका सम्बन्ध कृष्ण कथा और नृत्य से था।''
