The finished court is the part everyone sees. What makes it last is the stack underneath: a primer coat, two resurfacer coats to level the base, two cushion coats for comfort underfoot, two colour coats, then the lines.

Blossom Arts & Science College, Kondotti, Kerala. Indoor badminton court, done.

Day one was a bare tiled hall. We laid the underlay, rolled out a 4.5 mm vinyl court mat, heat-welded every seam so nothing lifts at the joins, marked the lines and set the poles and net.

Then the first rally.

If your college already has a hall, indoor vinyl is usually the quickest way to a proper court: no civil work, a cushioned surface that is kind to knees, and a bounce that stays true from baseline to net.

We finished a multi-sport court at a school in Sangola last month, and the part I keep thinking about is the photo nobody asks for.

It is the one of the bare PCC base, before any colour went down. Grey, unglamorous, completely uninteresting to look at.

That slab is everything.

Every failure we get called out to fix turns out to be a base problem wearing a surface problem's clothes, and by the time anyone calls us the coating has already taken the blame for two years. Water sitting where it should have run off. A slab poured without a fall. Coating peeling in one strip along one edge, year after year, because that is where the water goes.

You can recoat a court beautifully. If the base is wrong it will crack again in the same line within two seasons.

If you are planning a court this year, ask your contractor two questions before you ask about colours. What is the fall, and where does the water actually go. If there is no clear answer, the quote is cheap for a reason.
