Dr. Vece Paes
April 30, 1945 – August 14, 2025

Dr. Vece Paes was a rare blend of sporting brilliance, medical expertise, and visionary leadership. A midfielder in the Indian men’s field hockey team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, he was also a gifted multi-sport athlete, actively participated in football, and cricket.

After hanging up his boots, he devoted himself to sports medicine, serving as a trusted medical consultant to the Asian Cricket Council, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the Indian Davis Cup team. His administrative contributions were equally remarkable—he was a founding member and president of the Indian Rugby Football Union and also led the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club (CC&FC), shaping the growth of sport across disciplines.

Beyond his personal achievements, he nurtured a remarkable sporting legacy through his family, with his son, tennis great Leander Paes, carrying the Paes name to the world stage. Dr. Vece Paes leaves behind a legacy defined by versatility, selfless service, and the seamless union of athletic excellence and medical dedication.
