Nagar Saastha Samithy was formed in the year 1981 with the primary objective of propagating the cult of ‘LORD AYYAPPA’ – the symbol of Unity in Diversity. The first Lord Swamy Ayyappan’s Temple is situated amidst 18 hills under the regime of the Pandalam dynasty. The temple is situated on a hilltop popularly known as “Sabarimala” at an altitude of 468 m (1535 ft) above mean sea level, and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. Temples exist in each of the hills surrounding Sabarimala. While functional and intact temples exist at many places in the surrounding areas like Nilackal, Kalaketi, and Karimala, remnants of old temples survive to this day on remaining hills in Sabarimala (Kerala). It is the largest annual pilgrimage in world with an estimated 45–50 million devotees visiting for darshan of Lord Ayyappan. This is the only temple in the world there is no religion barrier, no wealth barrier and no physique barrier. People from all religions reach to this temple every year. Rich and poor share the pilgrimage together by helping each other during journey and no money power is see in this temple for darshan. Everyone looks alike. Every one pronounce the only mantra "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa", this brings unity among people. Our Samithy in Kolkata is not confined to religious functions only. We have over the years taken efforts in depicting the South Indian cultures to the host society in Bengal in order to bring about unity in diversity and understanding of different religions’ and cultures in India. During the growth of our Samithy, we had purchased a small plot of land and on which a prayer hall had been constructed for the convenience of the devotees for their peaceful worshipping and for conducting Pujas and Bhajans. Hundreds of devotees are regularly attending the Pujas and Bhajans. We are conducting mass feedings on all important puja days and occasions throughout the year. At last we have constructed a Temple in line with the architectural designs of South Indian style and installed the Deity of Lord Ayyappan and daily puja is being performed.
