โ€œThe basic concept behind somatotypes, depending on how far back into the history you go, consists of two things:

1) That people fall into one of three specific body categories that dictate overall shape, body composition, weight accumulation, etc., and that dietary/nutrition strategies should be adjusted accordingly

2) That these somatotypes *also* associate with specific personality traits and general behavioral patterns.

Neither of these assertions holds up to scrutiny. There is no credible link between specific body shapes/compositions and specific personality types, and there is also no real reason to believe that people have one of those three types of bodies. It is pseudoscience.

People exist along a spectrum of weight distribution and body proportions -- not three discrete categories -- and regardless of what body shape a person has, the strategies employed to modify body composition will be the same. They have the same underlying physiology, so the same nutritional and training principles will be employed to get a person to lose fat, gain muscle, improve energy levels, get stronger, etc. Even if we *did* have specific somatotypes (which we do not), it wouldn't change how we train or eat.

We still obey the same thermodynamic laws, and muscles still respond to the same signaling. Resting metabolism and certain genetic factors may affect the *difficulty* of getting into a calorie surplus/deficit, adding muscle tissue, recovering from a workout, etc., but the principles will remain the sameโ€

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT BIOMECHANICS ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ”จ๐Ÿ“

In my opinion, there is WAY TOO MUCH attention and focus on so called "Perfect or Correct" form during exercising in Rehab and Training!

๐Ÿ”บThe claim is that -
Only certain postures, positions & movements are "Perfect or Correct" and other postures, positions or movements which don't look like the so-called perfect postures, are "Bad, Wrong, Harmful or Dangerous".

โš ๏ธ
๐Ÿ“ŒThere is nothing more off-putting or annoying than having to CONSTANTLY nitpick & pay attention to every little microscopic detail and part of your body during an exercise, in order to achieve that "Perfect, Correct, Good" Posture.

๐Ÿ“ŒSimply put, both Pain and Injury may occur due to multiple factors working in combination and sometimes they may not even occur together, and yes of course Biomechanics is a part of this, but often, it may only be a small part.

โœ‹But this is NOT to say that form and technique are NEVER important.

๐Ÿ“ŒIf a movement is uncomfortable or feels awkward to some individuals, then some attention on technique may help! Maybe modifying the movement may help too. BUT this doesnโ€™t mean the old posture or position was โ€˜BADโ€™ and the new non painful one is โ€˜GOODโ€™ or โ€˜IDEALโ€™ in general. Often its not the Posture, position or movement that's the cause of Pain or Injury, but rather the ๐Ÿ”บLack of Tolerance๐Ÿ”บ to them!

โœจAll human movement is gloriously variable and remarkably unique! โœจ
โš ๏ธHence, to assume that some movements are "Perfect, good, correct" and others are "Wrong, bad", and to try to limit and constrain the so-called "bad" movements, goes against the very fundamental uniqueness of being an individual human being!

๐Ÿ™„So whenever I see images like these (given below) with a tick โœ… or cross โŒ next to exercises, I question why? Why are any of these examples with ticks better than the other with the cross?

๐Ÿ’กThere are very few dangerous exercises.
All Exercise is Good and Safe if the Load Management & Tissue Tolerance is taken care of. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’ช

MESSAGE TO ALL THE TRAINERS/TRAINEES OBSESSED WITH STATIC POSTURE AND WANTING TO CORRECT IT

"It's too bad that Michael Johnson didn't have all these weekend certified, corrective exercise gurus to "fix" his "dysfunctional" running posture".

"And man, if Michael Phelps only had access to functional based physical therapists, they could "fix" his forward head posture and extreme kyphosis because he really sucks."

"Or wait, maybe the human body isn't completely symmetrical. Maybe we aren't all clones? Maybe there are natural and normal variances in our structure, flexibility, and the way we move."

"There is no perfect posture. So stop creating issues that don't exist and stop telling people they are dysfunctional. I'm ready for this fad to be over. On to the next one please."

โ€œThere is an increasing societal concern that consumption of specific foods such as sugar might become โ€˜addictiveโ€™ and, hence, promote weight gain. Claims about the addictiveness of sugar however are based largely on findings from few animal studies, whereas there is a lack of direct human evidence for symptoms of sugar-related substance dependence.

โ€œThe current findings indicate that sugary foods contribute minimally to โ€˜food dependenceโ€™ and increased risk of weight gain. Instead, they are consistent with the current scientific notion that food energy density, and the unique individual experience of eating, plays an important role in determining the reward value of food and promoting excessive energy intake.โ€

โ€œWe find little evidence to support sugar addiction in humans, and findings from the animal literature suggest that addiction-like behaviours, such as bingeing, occur only in the context of intermittent access to sugar. These behaviours likely arise from intermittent access to sweet tasting or highly palatable foods, not the neurochemical effects of sugar.โ€

โ€œGiven the lack of evidence supporting it, we argue against a premature incorporation of sugar addiction into the scientific literature and public policy recommendations.โ€

โ€œThere is no support from the human literature for the hypothesis that sucrose may be physically addictive or that addiction to sugar plays a role in eating disorders.โ€

The Switch and The Regulator Analogy
- which one are you?

When someone talks about dieting for health/fat loss/muscle gain, the first thing which comes to most peopleโ€™s mind is that they need to stop (switch OFF) eating food which they classify under โ€œ junk, processed, unhealthy, high GI, etcโ€ and start eating (switch ON) โ€œhealthierโ€ foods such as less oil, low GI, unprocessed, organic, etc
This kind of thinking usually stems from an either-or approach to dieting. This way of dieting can be unsustainable long term.
- THE SWITCH

We could avoid dieting in such a dichotomous way and instead put every type of food on a spectrum starting from MORE to LESS Nutrient dense or MORE to LESS Calorie dense. This could potentially build the sense of moderation and also create room for more flexibility and variety. We can then stop blaming one specific type of food/macro and eat almost everything and YET be on track.
- THE REGULATOR
