Why Most Indian SME Businesses Are Not Growing Despite Having Good Products

After working across finance, research, marketing, advertising and business strategy for more than two decades, one thing I have realised very clearly:

Most Indian SME and MSME businesses do not fail because of bad products.

They fail because of weak market ex*****on.

Today, India has thousands of manufacturers producing reasonably good products across categories — food, home care, personal care, electricals, kitchenware, chemicals, garments, FMCG and many more.

But having a good product is no longer enough.

The real challenge starts after manufacturing.

Questions every SME owner should ask:

• Is the product positioned correctly in the market?
• Is the pricing architecture sustainable?
• Are distributors making money?
• Are retailers interested in pushing the product?
• Which SKU is actually profitable?
• Is the company tracking secondary sales properly?
• Is marketing creating sales or only visibility?
• Is working capital being utilised efficiently?
• Is the business growing profitably or only growing in turnover?

Unfortunately, many SME businesses in India still operate emotionally instead of strategically.

Some focus only on production.
Some focus only on advertising.
Some focus only on sales.

But sustainable growth happens only when finance, distribution, branding, product positioning, trade strategy and ex*****on work together.

Post-Covid, the market has changed completely.

Consumers have become price-sensitive.
Competition has increased sharply.
Digital clutter is everywhere.
Margins are shrinking.
Distribution is becoming more difficult.

In this environment, businesses need more than marketing agencies.

They need structured business consulting and ex*****on support.

That is exactly why I started Contentment Consulting — to work closely with SME and MSME businesses in improving growth, profitability, distribution, positioning and overall business performance.

Because in today’s India, growth is not only about selling more.

Growth is about building a stronger and more profitable business model.

India does not have a product problem.

India has a market ex*****on problem.
