Canelo Alvarez rolls past Edgar Berlanga in one-sided decision
LAS VEGAS -- Canelo Alvarez, boxing's top star, retained his unified super middleweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Alvarez floored Berlanga with a monstrous left hook in Round 3 -- his money punch -- and prevailed via scores of 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109. ESPN scored it a 120-107 shutout.
This was the fifth consecutive decision victory for Alvarez, who hasn't scored a knockout win since he defeated Caleb Plant in November 2021. It's also the fourth consecutive bout where Alvarez scored a knockdown.
"Now what are they gonna say?" Alvarez, 34, said during his postfight interview. "I fight younger fighters. They say I fight older fighters. They always talk. ... My experience, my talent, my hard work, my intelligence, everything together [makes me the best]. If you have talent but you don't have discipline, you have nothing."

Alvarez, ESPN's No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer, is an all-time great. Berlanga, meanwhile, was fighting on the world-class level for the first time. Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) was a -1600 favorite, per ESPN BET, and a -250 favorite to earn the win inside the distance.
However, Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) rarely threw a power punch, clearly wary of presenting a counter-punching opportunity for one of the sport's best at capitalizing on such openings. Following the knockdown, as Berlanga sat on the canvas and banged his gloves together, he entered survival mode.

Alvarez pressed forward and tried to close distance as Berlanga pumped his jab from out of range. And while Berlanga was rugged on the inside and showed some toughness, he clearly wasn't willing to sell out and risk becoming a knockout victim.
"I'm upset," Berlanga said. "I fought a legend tonight. Hopefully this is the start today of me becoming a future legend. ... I took his best shot, I believe, in the third round."
The Brooklynite of Puerto Rico heritage began his career with 16 first-round KOs, but as he stepped up in competition, his power dissipated. Berlanga, 27, entered his first title shot on the heels of a sixth-round knockout victory over Padraig McCrory in February.
Alvarez, naturally, is several levels above such an opponent, and his wealth of experience showed. He was the far more comfortable fighter, though he was frustrated on occasion by Berlanga's roughhouse tactics, as referee Harvey Dock warned the pair numerous times.
"Fighters like to throw each other off their games," Berlanga said.
Alvarez was once again headlining on Mexican Independence Day Weekend, one of two boxing holidays reserved for the sport's top attraction. And he wasn't ready to discuss whom he wants to face when he eventually returns on Cinco De Mayo Weekend.
In the lead-up to the bout, Alvarez told ESPN on Wednesday he was interested in a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, who defeated him in May 2022 at 175 pounds. That's provided Bivol beats Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight championship Oct. 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Another option was ringside: Terence Crawford, the future Hall of Famer who remains undefeated. He made his 154-pound debut last month with a win over Israil Madrimov and told ESPN on Thursday he'd like to fight Alvarez at the full-fledged 168-pound limit with no rehydration clause.
"I think it would tell the No. 1 guy of this era in the post-Mayweather era, who's the king of kings," Crawford said.
Whomever Alvarez fights next, he'll still be in search of his first knockout victory since November 2021, though he hasn't lost many rounds in the process.
Said Alvarez: "I'm the best fighter in the world."

BKFC champion plans to donate brain 🧠 to science🔬 ‘It’s not like I need to keep it’
Christine Ferea has spent years putting her fists to use to make a career in combat sports, but the BKFC women’s flyweight champion will also be donating her brain to science when it’s all said and done.
For those who are not familiar with Ferea’s work, the 41-year-old combat veteran is easily one of the most dominant bareknuckle fighters on the BKFC roster today. She has compiled a near-perfect 8-1 record since joining the promotion back in 2018, including three-straight title defenses and six stoppages in total. Ferea is basically the O.G. of the BKFC’s women’s division.
Despite fighting into her 40’s, Ferea is comfortable putting her health on the line when she enters the ring. That’s because the bareknuckle fighter took part in a brain study nearly a decade ago and has remained in the testing program ever since. It has provided her with valuable information about her overall well-being and what she’s been doing to her body, specifically her brain.
“I didn’t know what it was at first, and I went in and they do a brain scan on you, and it lets you know if your cognitive [function] is getting messed up, if your brain is damaged from the hits,” Ferea told MMA Fighting. “The first one is like a two-hour scan, and then every three years they do the two-hour scan, and then I do [another scan] every year.
“They let me know if I’m cognitively declining, if my brain is declining, if there’s brain damage accumulating. They do several cognitive tests, balance, so many different things to make sure [I’m healthy].”
Keeping track of her brain activity and cognitive function has given Ferea a sense of relief when it comes to fighting. Combat sports is such a dangerous road to travel, but if you’re monitoring your health and understanding what the damage sustained during a fight can do to you long-term then things become more manageable.
“Now I don’t have to wonder,” she explained. “Am I getting messed up? Am I taking too many hits? How am I going to affected down the road? Because I have a meeting with the doctor after every MRI and the cognitive [testing] and all that kind of testing, and then they read the results, and then I meet with him right after. He runs down everything for me, he’ll tell me. I trust him. It’s good not to wonder what I’m doing to my brain every year.
“If I’m starting to decline, I’m quitting. Period. I’m not messing with my brain. If I break bones, if my back hurts, my shoulder, if that hurts I still care about that, but not as much as my brain.”
After all is said and done, Ferea plans to donate her brain to science for further study, specifically for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
“I definitely will give my brain to the study,” Ferea said. “It’s not like I need to keep it or anyone else needs to keep it.”

Claressa Shields knocked🥊 out Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in second round to secure light-heavyweight and heavyweight world titles
Claressa Shields floored Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on three occasions in second round knockout win in Detroit; the American star stepped up two weight classes to fight for the WBO light-heavyweight title and also claimed Lepage-Joanisse's WBC heavyweight belt
Claressa Shields knocked out Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse with ease in the second round to secure world titles in a fourth and fifth weight division.
Shields stepped up two weight classes to fight for the WBO light-heavyweight title and also claimed Lepage-Joanisse's WBC heavyweight belt after flooring the Canadian on three occasions in Detroit.
Spiteful combinations from Shields troubled Lepage-Joanisse from the opening bell and she ruthlessly ended the fight in the following round.
With her back to the ropes, Shields unloaded a flurry of punches that sent Lepage-Joanisse crashing to the canvas.
Lepage-Joanisse rose unsteadily and was floored again by a follow up attack from Shields that ended with a short, sharp right hand.
Another overhand right sent Lepage-Joanisse down again and the referee waved it off, sparking celebrations from Shields and her hometown fans.
"Looking at Vanessa in her fights, she pushed girls back because her legs are very strong," said Shields.
"We made sure I have the power in my legs to push her back, and not get pushed back, and also really worked on the strength in my arms."
Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, had previously won won titles at 154, 160 and 168 pounds.
On the undercard, Julian Smith, a deaf boxer from the Chicago area, improved to 9-2 with an upset split-decision victory over Shohjahon Ergashev at super-lightweight.
