ICC World T20 2007 held in South Africa was nothing less than the birth of the giant that T20 has now become. Sure, T20 matches were played before that but the inaugural tournament which turned out to be a mega event kickstarted the rapid growth of this format. Going down the memory lane we are going to relive the very first match of the tournament – West Indies vs South Africa.
Everytime you watch Christopher Henry Gayle walk out to bat you expect nothing less than fireworks! And the fans weren’t disappointed a bit. With 10 SIXES and 7 FOURS, he scored a 117 off just 57 balls. The world was astounded to see the likes of Po***ck being hit for 13 rpo! It looked like the hosts were destined to lose this one. West Indies went on to score 205 in that match!
But when has South Africa ever backed out of a challenge? Riding on a blitzkrieg 90 off 55 from Herschelle Gibbs and 46 off 22 from Justin Kemp (both not out till the very end) saw South Africa chase down the impossible. However, did I mention that the impossible was done in just 17.4 over?
What could have been a better start to this World Cup of endless memories!

PS. West Indian bowlers might have helped the Proteas tad bit by giving away 28 extras which still remains the 2nd highest extras ever conceded in a T20 innings.
To give interesting insights on the upcoming T20 World Cup, a talk would be given by a sports expert and sponsorship agent for FC Barcelona - Mr. Abhishek Sharma alongside Mr Dilip Vengsarkar.

What a match! India met Pakistan for the inaugural edition of WT20 at a noisy Kingsmead in Durban in September 2007. A brilliant 4-wicket haul from Mohammad Asif let India just clear the 140 runs mark thanks to R. Uthappa’s 50 off 39. India restricted Pakistan to 100 off 17 overs with some disciplined bowling and determined fielding. It was not yet over for Pakistan as their star batsman Misbah-ul-Haq rose up to the challenge with an outstanding 53 off 35 balls. Pakistan now needed 1 run off 2 balls. Sreesanth beat Misbah with a quick, short ball and then off the final delivery, with 10 of the 11 Indians inside the circle, the batsman could only get the ball to cover from where Yuvraj relayed it to the bowler and ensured a run out that tied the scores.
Time for Bowl-out and the rest is history!
PS. Had Pakistan won the match in under 14.4 overs, India wouldn’t have qualified for the super 8 in the world cup tournament which they go on to win!
