On the morning of Sunday, 11 September, 2016, 180 volunteers from schools, colleges and community groups descended upon Girgaum Chowpatty for the Mumbai Beach Clean-up organised by Maharashtra Nature Park, WWF-India and Rae Sport. The volunteers, working in concert with the BMC, cleaned approximately 400 metres of sandy beach of its trash and post Visarjan waste. Worth noting is that volunteers segregated the garbage into three piles for easy removal by the BMC. Waste was segregated into plastics and other non-biodegradables, dry organic and wet organic waste.

Volunteers braved the intermittent showers while cleaning and piling the segregated waste in designated areas from where BMC staff were able to swiftly finish the cleanup. Volunteers from WWF-India Volunteers, Eco Buddies, Manav Ekta Mission, MUMO - Mumbai Moms showed great enthusiasm for the post Gauri Visarjan beach clean-up. Students volunteers from M. D. College, K. C. College, Bandodkar College, Vibgyor High (Airoli) and the Don Bosco Centre for Learning were a wonderful representation of the environmental conscientiousness of Mumbai's youth. Local BMC and the Mumbai Police support the Mumbai Beach Cleanup beach saw the activity run smoothly until the sandy South Bombay stretch was cleared by mid-morning.
