Recently, Reliance Retail acquired the wellness brand Pahadi Local, a brand known for products inspired by Himalayan ingredients.
But this raises an interesting question.
What exactly makes a product “Pahadi” or “Local”?
One of the key ingredients used by the brand is Himalayan Apricot Kernel Oil, traditionally known in mountain regions as gutti ya chulli ka tel. For generations, people in Himalayan communities have used this oil for skincare, hair care, and even cooking.
In this video, we explore how traditional Himalayan ingredients are transformed into modern wellness products, how sourcing from regions like Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Kashmir works, and why understanding the value chain of regional products is important.
As Himalayan-origin brands grow nationally and globally, it becomes even more important that local communities, farmers, and traditional knowledge systems also benefit from this growth.
One possible way forward is creating stronger identity and traceability for Himalayan products through initiatives like Made in Himalayas, where producers and brands can register their products and build a verified Himalayan ecosystem.
If you are working with a Himalayan product or brand and want it to be part of such a certified identity system, comment “Made in Himalayas.”

Himachal’s Economy at a Turning Point. Why the Revenue Deficit Grant Matters

Himachal Pradesh’s economy may be entering a sensitive phase.

For years, the Revenue Deficit Grant helped mountain states like Himachal manage the gap between their income and essential expenditure. Running public services in a Himalayan state is inherently expensive due to terrain, disaster risks, and limited industrial capacity.

Now, as this grant approaches its scheduled end, an important question emerges:

How should Himachal shape its economic future?

Should the state move towards new internal revenue models?
Should sustainable entrepreneurship and local businesses become a stronger pillar of the economy?
And should mountain states be viewed through a different economic lens compared to plains states?

What do you think?

Do you believe Himachal should continue receiving the Revenue Deficit Grant considering its unique geography and recent natural disasters?

Share your thoughts in the comments.

HIMSEED Mentorship Collective
From Migration to Mountain Enterprise.

On World NGO Day, we are proud to introduce the HIMSEED Mentorship Collective.

Across the Himalayas, youth migration continues despite multiple government schemes and development policies. The challenge is not absence of opportunity.
The challenge is access, clarity, and ex*****on.

HIMSEED Mentorship Collective is designed to bridge the gap between policy and people. Through structured mentorship, grant literacy, sector-focused capacity building, and on-ground activation, we aim to strengthen mountain-based enterprises and responsible livelihoods.

We are building a tribe of mentors, practitioners, and entrepreneurs committed to integrated, resilient, and scalable livelihood systems.

If you believe development must be grounded, policy-aware, and community-driven, join the collective : [email protected]

Trade Deals- Cheap imports today.
Expensive consequences tomorrow.

Policy decisions don’t affect governments first. They affect Rural India- farmers, dairy keepers, horticulturists and eventually your health.

If imports increase:
• Animal feed systems change
• Dairy price pressure rises
• Oilseed diversity declines
• Chemical use pressure increases
• Climate and income risk grow

This isn’t about stopping trade.
It’s about making trade work for India, not against its rural backbone.

Himachal can lead.
India can protect its food systems.

Hidden Costs of Clean Energy in Ladakh

What if the race to clean energy brings unseen tradeoffs?
Ladakh, the “roof of the world,” is set to become India’s renewable powerhouse, where blazing sun and steady winds promise to deliver 10–13 GW of green energy for a sustainable future.
But beneath the headlines, a new story is unfolding.

This video unpacks the lesser-known costs of India’s mega solar and wind power project in Pang and Changthang.
On the one hand: a national leap towards 500 GW of clean power by 2030, global climate responsibility, and green innovation.
On the other:
- Thousands of Changpa nomads who risk losing their ancient grazing grounds and the world’s finest [Pashmina] wool heritage.
- 48,000 acres of highland pastures taken over, threatening centuries-old livelihoods with little compensation or transparency.
- A fragile Himalayan environment facing new water and land stress as solar panels and power corridors demand space, roads, and maintenance.
- Worries of “green grabbing” where the rush for climate action risks erasing Ladakh’s social and ecological balance.

We bring voices from the plateau: herders, activists, and climate scientists, along with a look at pilot projects aimed at balancing energy generation with traditional livelihoods.

Can renewable dreams and cultural identity coexist?
Is the future of clean energy truly “clean” for everyone?
Watch for the truth that rarely makes the headlines:

Let’s talk solutions, rooted in respect, sustainable innovation, and real local participation.

World Habitat Day Special 🌍
Habitat = Survival, not just shelter.
But today, unsustainable construction is putting our slopes and communities at risk.
We need to bring back balance — traditional wisdom + modern science.
Himalayas teach us that a house is not just shelter — it is survival.
From Spiti’s mud houses to Kullu’s kathkuni,
from Kangra’s lime-plastered homes to Chamba’s compact dwellings —
every style is a science of resilience.
Tell us in the comments:
What is the most urgent housing priority for the Himalayas?

Dr. Jane Goodall (1934 – 2025)

A pioneer, a voice for the voiceless, and a guardian of the wild.
She taught us that compassion is a form of intelligence, and that every being, human or animal- deserves dignity.
Her legacy will forever echo in forests, in the eyes of chimpanzees, and in the hearts of all who dream of a kinder Earth.

“Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, shall all be saved.” – Jane Goodall
