Unlike other organs, the t3sticl3s are not protected by bone or muscle. Hitting them is effective for self-defence primarily due to the high concentration of sensitive nerve endings and the extreme pain triggers a physiological response called the vasovagal reflex. This reflex causes a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, causing blood to flow to internal organs away from the extremities. This can cause nausea, dizziness and in rare cases fainting.

In any self defence situation, your first reaction needs to happen in the first 3 seconds of the attack and then you need to get out of that situation as quickly as possible.
Wasting time waiting for someone to pass out while they struggle, opens you up for another attacker or something else to go wrong.

Modern Karate has become a black belt factory, I see instructors rushing to hand out black belts without proper training. Conditioning is missing, sparring is missing. The students gain a false sense of confidence that will lead them to trouble in a real life situation. Please find a Karate dojo/class that takes the training seriously.

Repeat after me: the street is NOT the place to show off any skills you think you have. It is NOT the place to bring your ego up top. It is NOT the place to release aggression and frustration. Getting home safely and in one piece should be your top priority.

I always stress the importance of strength training for women, especially those who are learning self-defence with me. It builds the strength, muscle, and stamina needed to get out of a street fight safely and quickly, and helps you fight attackers who might be bigger and heavier than you.

PS: this post is not meant to offend anyone who is learning, practicing, or teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I believe that has its merits and benefits. Letโs have a healthy debate about these merits and demerits.
This post is my opinion as a self-defence instructor who understands and has faced violence in a street fight. This is to help you differentiate between a combat sport and self defence, because walking around with a false sense of security is dangerous.
In a real street fight, where quick and efficient self-defence skills are needed to get out, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does not offer practical techniques for everyone. However, that said, BJJ as a combat sport is excellent, offering great grappling discipline and a good workout.

When I get queries from people who sound excited to become fighters, to learn how to punch and kick, I want to tell them that self-defence is not the fancy action you see in movies.
