TRIBUTE TO SIX AMAZING WOMEN IN MY LIFE

Women have had a huge role in shaping my personality. This is a good day to acknowledge their influence and contribution in my life.

First is my mother. My Amma. A strong personality especially in a crisis, someone who places extreme importance to education, and is very organized. Traits that I have imbibed too.

Next comes Cecilia teacher. She taught me geography and sowed the seeds of my love for geography in my future. Someone who knew how to make a subject interesting. Unfortunately we lost her a few weeks ago.

Next is Philomina teacher from my New English School Miraj days. A very soft-spoken, lovable teacher. Her classes were unmissable and you wished it never ended. Everyone's favourite really.

My aunt Rajashri, Raju Atya as I call her. Very articulate, very funny, very large-hearted. There is so much to learn from her - how to manage a joint family, how to make parenting fun and, also, how to run a successful business! I just love her.

Reena, my wife, is the fulcrum of the family. All our plans, celebrations, activities and decisions are centred around her. Beautiful, humorous, whacky, lovable, hard-working. She is the most honest person I have known. She turned my chaotic house into a lovely home. I certainly am the luckiest husband in the world.

And finally our daughter, Saakshi, sensible way beyond her 19 years age. Easily my best friend. The one I can lose my temper with, say the nastiest things to and still laugh about it soon after. She knows my dark secrets. She is my go-to person whenever I have a problem simply coz she is the world's best listener.

Happy Women's day.

She ties one end of the rope to the ceiling fan and the other around her neck. She kicks the stool away.

Thankfully exactly at that moment the hero breaks the door open and saves her life.

Why did this young girl want to commit su***de?

Well, she was being blackmailed about an inappropriate video.

This scene from a web series shook me.

Today I was discussing it with our daughter Saakshi.

Me: Why does the child go to such extreme measures? Could she not have sought her parents' help?

Saakshi: Logically yes. But it's not so easy. Here the child is petrified of sharing problems and mistakes with parents.

That set me thinking.

When she was growing up we would encourage Saakshi to confess the goofups, big or small.

In response we would appreciate her for being brave and talking about it.

Most times, the realization would already be there and a lecture wouldn't be needed.

Many years ago a project I was working on was in deep trouble. I suggested to my manager that we let our management and the customer know the true status. He flatly refused.

The project was a spectacular failure and the manager was sacked.

The post-facto analysis revealed that we had ignored some simple course corrections that could have saved the project.

It was an important lesson. Never suffer in silence and always encourage people, whether it's a team member or your child, to speak up.

If people around you are too quiet, you can safely assume that a tsunami is around the corner and you are the only idiot who doesn't know about it.

Charity and Leadership Skills - What is the Connection?

Some of the leading names of our times are amongst the biggest charity-givers – Bill Gates, Azim Premji, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Christiano Ronaldo, Sachin Tendulkar and so on. They may have earned extraordinary success in their fields be it sports, politics, business or entertainment but they draw a lot of satisfaction and take immense pride in their charity work.

But then, is there are any relation between charity giving and leadership? At the surface, none. Go deeper and you will find the connection. Here’s how doing charity helps in leadership -

1. IT RAISES YOUR SELF-ESTEEM
A leader is nothing without self-confidence and self-esteem. Just the act of helping a fellow-being enhances that feeling.

2. IMPROVES EMOTIONAL STABILITY
Leadership is a roller-coaster ride with so many highs and lows. An act of goodwill calms your nerves and tempers the emotions. You begin to see things in perspective. Many of the problems that you were affected by seem insignificant compared to the hardships your beneficiaries would be going through.

3. YOU INSPIRE OTHERS
The core of leadership is to influence people. It is to command respect through your actions and not demand respect through words.
A leader who does charity inspires his/her followers to also do the same.

4. NETWORKING
Many successful and busy people who you may never get to interact with otherwise could become accessible during your charity work. While networking can’t be your sole purpose of charity but it could be a happy byproduct.

5. SCARCITY TO ABUNDANCE MINDSET
We are what we think. With a scarcity mindset we fear not earning enough or losing what we have and becoming poor again. Well, we just might. An abundance mindset is where you think you will win more than you lose, you will grow, you will earn and you have enough to give away. It is needed for progress, for growth for fulfilling ambition.

When you do charity and see that it isn’t depleting your worth, your mindset gradually changes from scarcity to abundance.
Leadership requires an abundance mindset.

In our Leadership – INNER CIRCLE community members commit to a certain charity amount every week. The amount can be as low as one rupee. The amount isn’t important, the intent is. Charity can be done to any cause or institution that the member chooses. It could be a religious place, an education institution, food relief, environment, helping domestic staff, the homeless, anyone. Our members are doing a great job.

We are building a culture of charity and in the last 8 weeks we have donated Rs. 288,329. Our goal is to reach Rs. 1,00,00,000. It may take a while but we will get there someday.

Xmas greetings and a very happy new year to you.

Warm Regards

There was once a very wise King.

One morning in the King's durbar his minister said, “O King, we have 4 convicts today. All have committed theft. Their crimes are unrelated. Please mete out appropriate punishment for them.”

The first thief was presented in front of the King. The King had a good look at him and said, “You may go. Take care.”

The King looked at the second thief and said, “Don’t do this again else I will be very disappointed.”

To the third thief the King yelled “If you ever do this again your punishment will be so severe your worst nightmares will come true.” He gave him an earful and let him go.

The King looked at the fourth thief and exasperatedly said to his minister, “take him out, blacken his face, plonk him on a donkey and do a round of the city.”

The thieves were taken away.

The minister was shocked. He said, “Sir, what have you done? It was the same crime for all of them and yet your treatment was clearly inconsistent. I am sorry but that’s ridiculous.”

The King smiled and said to his minister, “Please follow them and observe their behaviour.”

The first thief, who the King said nothing to, left the kingdom forever. He was filled with shame and humiliation.

The second thief, who the King admonished mildly, stayed indoors for 2 months out of guilt but resumed life thereafter.

The third thief, who the King had given a verbal hiding, stayed indoors for 2 days.

The fourth one, who got the worst punishment, resumed his thievery the next morning.

The minister realized how the wise King had recognized the thieves’ level of remorse and calibrated his response accordingly.

As a people manager or a leader, your team members will all be unique. When things go wrong (or right), you should know what kind of treatment (reward or punishment) will work for who. You can’t apply the same tactic for everyone.

The better you are at understanding your team members individually, the more successful you will be.

Such skills will help you transform from an ordinary to a brilliant leader.
