Akon Set for Kigali Visit to Attend Youth Connekt Africa Summit (July 19 to 21)
Senegalese-American Rapper Akon Thiam will make an appearance in Kigali this month when he attends the sixth edition of the Globe Soccer Awards.
It’s been two years when Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam famously known as Akon left Rwandans hopeful for electricity and a good number of jobs during his visit to the country in July 2015.
During his visit, he promised to fast-track his project but since then no single sign has appeared on ground for the implementation.
13 days from today, Akon is expected to come back in Rwanda where he will join more than 1,500 participates in Youth Connekt Africa Summit that is scheduled on 19th -21st July.
“Son of the Soil/Global Super Star/Impact Investo & co founder of Akon Lighting Africa Akon now expected at YouthConnektAf Summit in Rwanda,” tweeted Njoya Tikum, the regional anti-corruption advisor for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) based in Addis Ababa.
“Akon was contacted by UNDP which is our partner in organizing Youth Connekt. He confirmed the invitation and if nothing changes, he will be in Rwanda,” a source told Rwanda Eye.
Rwanda is among the 14 African countries where Akon plans to launch his initiative that aims to bring electricity to 600 million Africans, especially those in rural areas.
Launched in February 2014, The Akon Lighting Africa is reported to have secured a one billion U.S. dollar credit line from a Chinese company – China Jiangsu International Group.
Besides the celebrated super star Akon, Jack Ma, the CEO and Founder of Alibaba Group is also expected to attend the summit.
“Legendary Chinese business magnate Jack Ma will visit Rwanda to share entrepreneurial tips with youths. We are in contacts and we expect him in Kigali for Youth Connekt Africa Summit,” Rwanda’s Minister of Youth and ICT Jean Philbert Nsengimana announced at Rwanda Day in Belgium last month.
Rwanda hosts Youth Connekt Africa Summit that will primarily focus on youth entrepreneurship and to explore and exploit opportunities on the continent.
The three day summit is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants including top executives from global companies that operate in Africa, leaders of civil society organizations, Africa’s development partners, members of the academia and most importantly successful entrepreneurs, artists and youth opinion leaders from across the continent.
