Today is Sjómannadagurinn ⚓🌊
Living in Iceland, it’s impossible not to feel the connection between people and the sea.
As a Portuguese woman, I have my own reason to be grateful. Some of my favorite childhood memories are gathered around a table with bacalhau — salt cod, a food that has been part of Portuguese culture for centuries.
So today, I also thank the fishermen and all those who have worked the seas, helping bring one of the world’s most beloved foods to our tables and our memories.
Happy Sjómannadagurinn to all who make their living from the ocean and to the generations before them who did the same. 🇮🇸⚓🇵🇹

a sign that winter is beginning to loosen its grip.
Historically, women were honored
for carrying families through the harshest months.
For their strength.
For their resilience.
For enduring the realities of a demanding climate.
In a country shaped by wind, ice, and long dark seasons,
survival required courage — and women were central to it.
When I look at these landscapes,
I see that same energy.
Standing under waterfalls.
Walking on glaciers.
Chasing rainbows.
Watching the northern lights.
Climbing mountains — even in the cold.
Strength here is not loud.
It is steady.
It endures.

Today marks 50 years since Icelandic women lay down their work to demand equal pay, leading the fight for equal rights globally. Much has been achieved since, but much work remains to be done, so we continue to march for equal pay and equal rights. Happy Women’s Day Off from Iceland, to all women worldwide ❤️
