站樁. Zhan Zhuang, Standing Pole Meditation Practice. The earliest trace of this practice appears in the Huangdi Neijing, in a passage describing the ancient sages, standing alone, guarding the spirit within, muscles held as one unified whole. Laozi’s Daodejing carries the same idea forward, describing standing unmoved as a way of holding to the center. By the Sui dynasty, medical texts were recording specific standing postures by name, and a Han dynasty silk painting, the Daoyin Tu, shows figures in poses close to what practitioners still hold today. Standing still, done correctly, has been treated as real practice for over two thousand years.

Martial artists trained in it as the foundation beneath every strike, since power generated without a stable root goes nowhere. Physicians treated it as a way to gather qi and strengthen yang, the kind of practice a person could do daily without equipment, without a special space, without needing to be young or strong to start. Musicians training on certain instruments have relied on the same stillness, the breath steady, the body upright, the mind settled before a single note is played. Across these very different disciplines, the standing itself came first.

The mesh enclosures in this video serve a purpose the Neijing addresses directly, in a line comparing wind to an arrow, something the wise are warned to avoid as carefully as a weapon aimed at the body. Wind striking the skin while the pores are open and the body is still is treated as an entry point for illness, cold and dampness slipping into muscle and joint before a person even feels the draft. The mesh breaks the force of the wind while still letting air move freely, protection without sealing the practitioner off from the outside entirely.
