From a $40,000 yearling to Horse of the Year.

She wasn't supposed to be a queen. She became a legend.

Foaled in Kentucky and bought for just $40,000, Thorpedo Anna proved that heart can't be catalogued.

When Kenny McPeek said "They better bring a bear, because I'm bringing a grizzly" before the Kentucky Oaks, nobody knew he was naming an era.

6 wins in 7 starts at 3. Kentucky Oaks (G1). Acorn (G1). CCA Oaks (G1). Cotillion (G1). Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). Then a head defeat to Fierceness in the Travers that made her even bigger.

12 wins. 7 Grade 1s. $5.4 million. 2024 Horse of the Year.

The Grizzly didn't just run. She hunted.

A Royal Pedigree 🐎
Storm Cat (February 27, 1983 – April 24, 2013) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and stallion — a dark bay c**t with a white star and stripe down his forehead, sired by Storm Bird (a son of Northern Dancer) out of Terlingua, herself a stakes-winning sprinter by Secretariat out of Crimson Saint.
On the track he won the Grade I Young America Stakes at the Meadowlands and was beaten a nose by Tasso in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
He retired to stud at Overbrook Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, where his fee climbed to $500,000 at its peak — the highest in North America at the time, though still short of the all-time record: Northern Dancer's $1,000,000, with no live-foal guarantee, set in the mid-1980s.
Storm Cat was leading sire in North America in 1999 and 2000, and leading juvenile sire a record seven times. He sired eight champions, 108 graded stakes winners and 180 stakes winners worldwide, with progeny earnings topping $127 million.
His most successful son at stud was Giant's Causeway, a three-time leading sire in North America. Among his classic winners, Tabasco Cat took the 1994 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Through Giant's Causeway, his grandsons include Shamardal🐎

He never made it to the Kentucky Derby starting gate. An infection stopped him on the morning of the race he'd been pointed toward for a year. Yet on September 19, 2026, The Puma found his classic anyway — just a few months and a few miles down the road.
At Parx Racing, under Javier Castellano for trainer Gustavo Delgado, the Essential Quality c**t swept six wide around the entire field on the far turn, took command in upper stretch to open a three-length lead, and held off a late charge from favorite Further Ado to win the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (G1) by a half-length in 1:49.10 for the 1 1/8 miles.
It was only his second win in seven career starts — but both were graded stakes. Behind him was a season of near-misses: a nose defeat in the Florida Derby (G1) in March, a fourth-place finish in a sloppy Haskell, another fourth in a crowded Travers. Further Ado, also the beaten favorite in the Kentucky Derby, finished second ahead of third-place Sassmaster.
For Castellano and Delgado, who won the 2023 Kentucky Derby together with Mage, it's proof that the road to glory rarely runs where you expect.
Sometimes being shut out of one race just means you're waiting for the right one🐎

The Horse Who Never Asked to Be Loved🐎
Some champions win to be adored. War Emblem won in spite of despising almost everything around him.
Nearly black and famously ill-tempered, he swept through 2002 with wins in the Illinois Derby, the Kentucky Derby (wire-to-wire at 20-1) and the Preakness Stakes, coming within one race of the Triple Crown before finishing eighth at Belmont, won by the 70-1 shot Sarava. He bounced back to win the Haskell Invitational and was named champion 3-year-old male of the year, before closing his campaign with off-form efforts in the Pacific Classic and the Breeders' Cup Classic. He retired with 7 wins from 13 starts and earnings topping $3.4 million. Sent to stand at stud in Japan, he proved a difficult, choosy breeder, siring a small but talented crop of runners. Pensioned and repatriated to the United States, he died four years later, at 21.
Not every champion needs to be understood. Some only need room to run🐎

No rival ever truly beat him. In twenty-one starts he lost only once, and even then it came down to a bad break from the gate. Yet the story still told around Lexington isn't about a defeat on the track — it's about grief.
For sixteen years, starting in 1930, groom Will Harbut was the one man who could settle Big Red. He introduced him to visitors at Faraway Farm with the same practiced monologue, repeated thousands of times: "There ain't no second Man o'War. This is the greatest hoss of them all." He called him "the mostest hoss that ever was."
In the spring of 1946, Harbut suffered a stroke and never returned to work. He died on October 3, 1947. Man o'War, who by witness accounts often asked after him during his absence, followed exactly one month later, on November 1, 1947. The official cause was a heart attack — but in Lexington, they've always said he died of a broken heart.

CHARISMATIC — 1999 BELMONT STAKES🐎
A quarter mile from history, his leg shattered mid-stride. Jockey Chris Antley leapt off before the horse even stopped, cradling the fractured leg off the ground so Charismatic couldn't do himself more damage — the same gesture captured in this photo. It cost him the Triple Crown. It may have saved the horse's life. As Daily Racing Form's Jay Hovdey put it: "The Triple Crown was lost, but Charismatic was saved."🐎

ZENYATTA 🐎MIKE'S WORDS
Mike Smith rode her in 17 of her 20 races, the only man who ever felt her go from last to first. Years after her retirement, the Hall of Fame jockey summed up what stayed with him: "It's kind of hard not to think of her every day."

Can we talk about the Classic at the end of October? It was supposed to be the race of the year — instead, it risks becoming a one-horse show.
Will Sovereignty even run? Where has Magnitude gone? Baeza simply isn't at that level. Renegade's nowhere to be seen either.
So all hope now rests on Golden Tempo. Let's hope he shows up in top form — racing deserves one truly epic Classic🐎

Golden Tempo Returns to Work at Keeneland🐎
First drill for Golden Tempo since his third-place finish in the Aug. 29 Travers at Saratoga. The Derby and Belmont winner, trained by Cherie DeVaux, breezed four furlongs in 47.4 seconds on the Keeneland dirt Friday — the fourth-fastest of 22 works at that distance. In the Grade 1 Travers, the Curlin c**t finished behind Leading Change and Preakness winner Napoleon Solo🐎
