Why did Heated Rivalry hit gay men so hard?

07/10/2026

I have a very loud inner critic. He's nasty, he's mean, he's got a
sharp tongue.

I've built the skill of self-compassion over the years, and I don't
beat the hell out of myself the way I used to. Which matters, because
if I'm not doing that, I do more of what I actually want to do. I'm
more me. I take more risks. I fail, I get rejected, I try again. And
it's fine.

Here's the thing people miss: if you study the most successful people,
the happiest people — they all have that voice. The difference is how
they relate to it. How they talk back to it.

Sometimes that's "enough, we're not doing that right now." Sometimes
it's giving yourself permission to be angry, or frustrated, or whatever
it is.

Learning to talk back has been my greatest lesson. And still my biggest
obstacle — because he's very loud, and he's very pushy.

Walking into a room full of gay men you don't know can feel harder than any boardroom.

You run through it in your head: Will I fit in? Will I get put on the spot? What if I've got nothing to say?

Everyone in Foundations had those same thoughts on day one. Nobody knows anyone when we start, so you're not slotting into someone else's clique. The 15 of us build the group together, from scratch.

Nobody's forced to share, but by week two most guys want to. That tends to happen once you're in a room where you don't have to perform.

📍 Foundations for Gay Men
🗓 Starts tomorrow, Wed Oct 7 · 7–8:30pm ET
⏳ 6 weeks · $297 · capped at 15 men

Most people would rather be liked by everyone, even if it means not
liking themselves.

And a lot of us got very good at that. As gay folks, we became good
people pleasers because we had to. I learned it early, and I think a
lot of us did — as a survival strategy.

Then we bring it into adulthood without ever stopping to say: wait.
The thing that kept me safe has become a cage. It isn't serving me
anymore.

The question I use to filter: what would I do in this situation if I
wasn't trying to be liked?

That always brings me home.

Did growing up 'different' shape how you show up as an adult?

04/10/2026

Almost everyone walks into a men's group a little nervous.

You're about to sit with a group of gay men and say things you don't usually say out loud. Of course there's trepidation.

Then someone shares something, and you think: oh. It's not just me.

That's the part a podcast or a book can't give you.

Foundations for Gay Men starts this Wednesday, Oct 7.
→ 6 weeks, Wednesdays 7–8:30pm ET on Zoom
→ Max 15 men
→ $297

For 30-plus years I didn't know my body was talking to me. Didn't know,
didn't care. I took it for granted and wore it down.

Now we have a much better relationship, because I actually listen.

"Listen to your body" used to be a saying other people said. Now I get
what it means. I can feel a no and a yes in my body - expansion or
contraction. Someone asks me to do something and my body goes: no,
we're not doing that. Or: yeah, that's a yes.

Best example - someone says "we're going for another drink, you want
one?" And my body goes: no, Michael. No you don't, honey.

Listening to that, instead of saying yes automatically, or because
everyone else is. And sometimes that means I go to bed at 9.

I think of the body as an exceptionally mind-blowing organism. Organism.
Not or**sm. I almost said or**sm.

But think about it, dozens of systems all working together for one
single task. Being alive.

It makes my head spin. All the things happening in my body right now
that I'm not aware of, not thinking about, not conscious of. My heart
beating. My lungs breathing. Forty-plus years, without a break.

And then I think about the mind drama. Smile lines. A wrinkle. Thinning
hair. A few pounds.

Really? That's what we're going to worry about, when there's that much
going on beneath the surface? Literally.

5 days until 'Foundations' starts. Here's what Frank said after his cohort ended.

"It made me face aspects of my life that I kept hidden. Knowing that I was not alone in my journey helped me to overcome shame."

That second sentence is the whole thing. Not the facing, most of you could face it alone if you had to. The not being alone while you do it.

"Ever since it ended, I have felt an inner peace and joy that I have not felt in a long time. This comes with the greatest freedom of all: self-acceptance."

I know what the hesitation is. It isn't the material. It's walking into a room of gay men you've never met and saying something true.

So here's what the room actually is: 15 men, capped. 6 weeks, Wednesdays 7–8:30pm ET. Every week you get paired one-on-one with someone else in the group, that's where most of the real connection happens. And when it ends, you're in the alumni community.

Nobody performs in there. That's the point of it.

Starts October 7. Comment FOUNDATIONS and I'll send you the link to join.
