Yesterdayâs weather played the perfect backdrop to the dayâs event⌠knowing it was going to be a sad day, it was Gray and dreary, the ground was wet from the early morning rain⌠Or maybe tears from heaven over the closing of Immaculate.
We had a beautiful mass, at the church where we all graduated from, many of us were baptized, made our first communion and were so many of us were married fromâŚ
Father Burla, did it again- another amazing homily, that in many ways served as one more pep rally and encouraged us to go live our lives the way we were taught to a ICHS⌠we were able to sing Immaculata we are proud of you; together, one more time.
Memories were shared and remembered walking through the school, reenacting School plays, basketball greatness, track practice in the gym⌠the chem lab, Mrs. Schmidtâs classroomâŚ
Then it was down to Codey Field, to enjoy one more Saturday afternoon on the field where football dreams were made, player-coach relationships formed, in the 40s and 50s baseball was played there tooâŚ
So, so many people came home- it wasnât just a tailgate party, it was a family reunion. And as we all got together, hugged and enjoyed ourselves , ate, drank and laughed; the sun came out - almost to remind us one more time- that we are a family- and family is forever.
For the first time in 100 years, the yellow brink building on a little street called ; Cottage Place might not be filled with student wearing the blue and white anymore- but it will always be our home; weâll always be family and there will always be sunny days ahead.
I think everyone who came out yesterday, and I mean everyone⌠almost every class in the past 50 years had at least one representative there⌠had a good time.
Thereâs not enough space or time or memory of my brain to name everyone that was there but if you look around social media youâll see so many photos so many faces youâll remember something that you didnât realize weâre there yesterday and miss seeing but I hope you try to reach out to them and either continue or rekindle the friendships that were forged by Codey Field during your high school years.
We had former teachers come back, former coaches, our longest living Alumni, Rose Baker from the class of 1941, complete with Immaculate blue highlights put in her hair for the day⌠Coach Finnegan and Mr. Dyer⌠Mrs Kern and Mr VillâŚJoe Kiernan and Jim LauterhahnâŚformer players and students both happy and excited to see them, to thank them.
So, we did start off as a dark gloomy day; similar to the way we felt- but being together, the day turned into a beautiful warm, sunny day at Codey Field to celebrating our history in our legacy⌠Our family, together.
A reminder one more time:
â Donât cry because itâs over, smile because it happenedâ
-Mr. Rogers
