Not all movement is medicine.

There is such a thing as moving incorrectly, you can move in ways that can create maladaptions making it more difficult to move and be resilient over time. When people exercise they don’t consider if the movements they do are making them more or less efficient, leaving them more prone to injuries, chronic fatigue, getting sick, and moving worse over time.

The FP First 4 is crucial for achieving the results you’re looking for. Focusing on these foundational movements allows you to move athletically and pain-free while slowing down the degeneration of your body over time. By aligning training with what our environment naturally drives us to do, we tap into the governing natural laws of our bodies. Physics applies not only to structures like the Empire State Building but also to our bodies, posture, and the way we move.

What are the most important movements parents strive for their children to learn? Are these movements also important for us to maintain as we age into our 70s, 80s, and beyond? Standing, walking, running, and throwing top that list. In fact, all other forms of movement directly stem from the FP First 4.

Other systems often focus on movements beyond this foundation. Since improving someone’s running mechanics is a difficult task, most systems focus on teaching flashy, eye-catching movements that offer very little meaningful change in overall mechanics. At Functional Patterns, we’ve discovered the formula that makes attaining lasting results possible.

Athletes like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Deion Sanders excelled in multiple sports because standing, walking, running, and throwing are the common denominators in high-level performance. Mastering these functions increases the likelihood of seamlessly transitioning between different types of human movement.

We don’t make these claims solely based on the foundation of our training system. Nature has led us to this understanding because our movements are dictated by our environment. Planet Earth sets the rules: prioritizing the FP First 4 in training creates a body that moves and reacts in ways that promote long-term health, minimizing degeneration and pain over time.

When it comes to building a strong foundation for your body, we need to take a similar approach to building a house. Before you add the walls, windows, doors, etc, it needs to have a symmetrical and balanced foundation to support everything else you build on top of it. Similarly, your body also has a foundation that supports the muscle you build and the way it functions…

Typically our bodies and houses are resilient and have the capacity to last a long time. Although without a proper foundation, you’ll find that wear and tear starts to set in much earlier than it should. Signs of an imbalanced or poor functioning foundation show up as pain or injury in the body, or as wall cracks or structural failures in a house or building…

We take a precise approach when it comes to building a home, but how many of us consider taking the same when it comes to our body? The truth is we don’t. And it’s why you see people’s bodies falling apart everywhere. By learning how to build a balanced foundation, you create stability and strength at the most fundamental level, which enables your joints and muscles to withstand gravity and the stressors of life for longer.

WHY ISOLATE?

When you can integrate.

Our muscles work together to produce movement or motion. This is known as systems training or muscular integration.

This is where the majority of training and rehab approaches fall short. They focus too narrowly on exercising isolated parts of the body rather than viewing the muscles, bones, and fascia as interconnected.

At Functional Patterns, we offer the most effective exercise methods that align with our biological blueprint and minimize wear and tear on your joints. We show you how to align your joints properly so your muscles can function correctly, eliminating pain and allowing your joints to move smoothly instead of grinding or stiffening up.
