今週の稽古では、週末に初めて大会へ出場する剣士たちに向けて、試合の流れや審判の役割について学びました。

立会から試合開始までの進行、審判の号令、そして旗の使い方――普段は選手として見ている光景も、実際に審判席に立ってみると想像以上に難しいものです。

今回は当会の剣士たち、そして先日三級に合格したばかりの剣士も審判役に挑戦しました。

「旗を上げるだけ」と思われがちな審判ですが、技の内容、気勢、間合い、残心など、限られた時間の中で多くの要素を見極めなければなりません。

試合を経験することはもちろん大切ですが、審判の立場を知ることで、競技への理解もさらに深まります。

今週末、大会に挑戦する皆さんの健闘を祈っています！

🇬🇧The Responsibility Behind Raising a Flag

This week’s training focused on helping our members prepare for their first taikai this weekend by introducing how a match is conducted and the role of the judges.

From the opening procedures and commands to the use of the judging flags, members had the opportunity to see a side of competition that is often overlooked.

Several students took turns acting as judges, including our newest 3rd kyū member, who recently passed their grading.

Judging may look simple from the outside, but it requires careful observation and quick decision-making. Judges must assess not only technical ex*****on, but also spirit, timing, distance, control, and zanshin, all within a matter of a few minutes.

Competing is an important part of learning, but understanding the responsibilities of the judges helps develop a deeper appreciation of the art and the challenges involved in fair competition.

今週の稽古は、子供剣士たちの級審査前最後の稽古でした。

当日は緊張することもあるため、今回は実際の審査を想定した形で稽古を行いました。立会からの号令に従い、審査員役が見守る中で礼法や基本動作、技を一つひとつ確認。普段の稽古とは違う空気の中で、それぞれが真剣に取り組んでいました。

審査は、今の自分の成長を確かめる大切な機会です。これまで積み重ねてきた稽古を信じて、当日は自分らしく力を発揮してくれることを願っています。

子供剣士の皆さん、頑張ってください！

🇬🇧Recreating the Real Thing to Ease the Nerves

This week's session was the final training before the upcoming kyū grading for our junior members.

Knowing that grading day can bring a different kind of pressure, we spent the evening running a full mock examination. Students responded to commands from the tachiai while judges observed, creating an atmosphere as close as possible to the real grading experience. From etiquette and posture to the ex*****on of techniques, every detail was practised under examination conditions.

A grading is an opportunity to demonstrate the progress earned through consistent training. We hope each student can trust in the work they have put in and perform with confidence on the day.

🇯🇵基本に戻るほど、新たな学びがある⚔️

今週の稽古は、初心者から審査・大会をに出る予定の門人まで、全員が学べるよう基本に立ち返りました。

今回のテーマは「前」。

相対稽古では、安全のため少し外した位置で行いながらも、相手を実際の敵と見立てて稽古しました。抜き付けから切り下ろし、納刀までの間とタイミングを相手に合わせていきます。

一人で形を繰り返すだけでは気付きにくい間合いや機会も、相手がいることでより明確になります。

基本の技だからこそ、繰り返すたびに新しい発見があります。

🇬🇧The More We Return to Basics, The More We Learn ⚔️

This week's training returned to the fundamentals so that both new students and those preparing for gradings or competitions could benefit together.

Our focus was Mae.

Through aitaigeiko (paired practice), we trained with a partner acting as an opponent. For safety, we worked slightly off-line while matching the timing of each movement, from the initial draw to the final nōtō.

Distance, timing, and opportunities that can be difficult to appreciate in solo practice often become much clearer when training with a partner.

The fundamentals are never “finished”; each repetition brings new discoveries.

🇯🇵京都大会・演武の一瞬

先日の京都大会のプロのカメラマンの方が撮影した写真です。
代表のジェームズ先生による演武の一瞬には、日々の鍛錬で積み重ねた技と心の集中が表れています。

先生曰く「恥ずかしい…色々な間違いが丸見えです。写真や動画を見て学ぼうとする人もいますが、間違いの元になります。映っているのは必ずしも演武者本人のベストな調子とは限っていないので。」

やはり演武とは、単なる技の披露ではなく、稽古のすべてを一瞬に凝縮した表現でもあります。そこに剣の道の深さが現れます。

🇬🇧Kyoto Taikai – Stills from the Embu

These are the photos taken by the professional photographers at the recent Kyoto Taikai.
They capture some moments of the embu by our dōjō leader, James Sensei, in which years of discipline and focus are expressed in a single demonstration.

Sensei himself commented:
“I feel a bit embarrassed… you can clearly see various mistakes. Some people try to learn by studying photos or videos, but that can also lead to misunderstandings. What is captured is not necessarily the performer’s best condition at that moment.”

Embu are not simply demonstrations of technique, but a concentrated expression of everything cultivated through training. It is in this way that the depth of the study of iai is revealed.

🇯🇵目付で業が決まる👀

今週の稽古は、新しい仲間もまた増え、準備運動・素振りから始まり、基本の確認へ。
五行の構えと受け方の組太刀稽古で間合いを磨き、その後、審査組と試合組に分かれてそれぞれの課題に集中しました。

最後は「目付」についての話し合いながら、視線と動きの一致を意識しながら揃え抜きでその目付を確認しました。

目が変われば、業が変わる。

🇬🇧Technique is decided by metsuke👀

This week’s keiko welcomed another new member, and we began with warm-ups and suburi, returning to the fundamentals.
We then worked on paired kumitachi drills based on the Five Forms of kamae and receiving techniques, refining maai. After that, the group split into grading practice and competition training, each focusing on their respective goals.

To finish, we discussed metsuke, emphasizing the the connection between gaze and movement. We then applied this through soroenuki, sharpening and checking our metsuke throughout the techniques.

When the eyes change, the technique changes.

派手な内容ではありませんが、こうした「繰り返し」の稽古こそ、技を磨く大切な時間です。

居合の上達は、大きな変化よりも、見えにくい細部の積み重ねにあるのかもしれません。

🇬🇧 The most rewarding keiko is often the quietest ⚔️
This week’s keiko focused on shinsa and taikai preparation.

There was nothing especially flashy about the session, but this kind of repeated practice is exactly what sharpens technique over time.
We worked carefully on metsuke, timing, noto, posture, and maintaining composure under pressure.
In iaidō, improvement is often found not in dramatic changes, but in the accumulation of small details.

The few minutes seen during a grading or competition embu are built upon countless repetitions in the dōjō.

One cut at a time.

今週の稽古は、京都大会後初めての通常稽古となり、多くの会員が参加され、道場も活気に満ちた時間となりました✨

今回の稽古では、ジェームズ先生より「防・制・殺」についてのご指導がありました。
刀にはそれぞれ役割があり、“防ぐ”部分、動きを“制する”部分、そして敵を“殺す”部分。
形だけではなく、刀の理合と役割を理解することの重要性を学びました。

基本に立ち返りながらも、非常に深い学びのある稽古となりました。
ご参加された皆様、お疲れ様でした！

🇬🇧one sword, various functions 🗡️

This week marked our first regular practice after the Kyoto Taikai, with many members attending and bringing great energy back to the dōjō ✨

During keiko, James Sensei introduced the concept of“bō • sei • satsu”explaining the different sections of the sword and their functions.
Every part of the blade has purpose — the part used to defend, the part used to control, and the part used to cut down the enemy.
Beyond simply performing technique, we studied the deeper logic and function behind the sword itself.

A very meaningful return to training after Kyoto.
