The cute little thing that looks like a bunny head with ears is actually a type of tiny crustacean zooplankton called “copepods”. They are like cows of the sea, eating the phytoplankton and converting the sun’s energy into food for higher trophic levels in the food web. Copepods are some of the most abundant animals on the planet. Those “bunny ears” are actually egg sacs full of baby copepods.

Indian mackerel, or found widely along the coast of the tropical and subtropical, Indo pacific. However, in Japan, they are only found in Okinawa. Its Japanese name is also the local Okinawan name: gurukuma. Mature Indian mackerel, drew to reach 40 cm in length, and one of the most interesting features. Is how they feed.
This fish has gill rakers in its gills that act as a comb to filter plankton. They swim and feed with their mouth open wide, which makes them look like Japanese carp streamers (koinobori).

𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 (𝕟𝕠𝕥 𝕚𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝔹𝕦𝕥𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕤 𝕥𝕚𝕞𝕖)
The harlequin crab 𝑳𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒐𝒓𝒃𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒔 (Portunidae) lives in association with sea cucumbers. It can be seen walking over the body of its hosts, but it often shelters within the gut cavity, or near the oral tentacles and a**s.

This is why I so lovingly refer to these cutie crustaceans as a “butthole crabs” and I can often be seen shining a light into the “exit only” end of what I refer to as bread loaf sea cucumbers (𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒙).

This was the first time I came across a little butt spelunker emerging from its cuke caboose and getting some fresh water on the outside. I was definitely excited to be able to try and snap some portraits from this exterior location - a bit easier than trying to illuminate and focus through a quickly opening and closing sphincter the size of a nickel.

𝙻𝚘𝚘𝚔 𝙰 𝙻𝚒𝚝𝚝𝚕𝚎 𝙲𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚎𝚛 - 𝚈𝚘𝚞 𝙽𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝙺𝚗𝚘𝚠 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚈𝚘𝚞 𝙼𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝 𝙵𝚒𝚗𝚍.

My friends always poke fun at me that I like to go “bug hunting” when we’re diving - but it was a delight to find these pregnant little shrimp hiding on the backside of this beautiful anemone which was home to two different species of clown fish. The whole little rock was teeming with life surrounded by a beautiful sandy bottom.

Fertilization of eggs of this species occurs externally. Females first deposit their eggs and use stored s***m from a male to fertilize them. Broadclub cuttlefish have eggs of roughly 1.8 to 2 cm in diameter, and they take about 40 days from the time they are fertilized to hatch. Because these eggs are transparent, young cuttlefish can be seen growing inside. [Common cuttlefish eggs contain a tiny amount of ink to make them black].

Juvenile broadclub cuttlefish eventually break out of the egg by propelling the pointed anterior ends of their cuttlebones at the egg sac wall with force. Newborn cuttlefish are about 14 mm (.5”) in mantle length with arms of 2 mm. By the time they reach maturity they are about 160 mm (6.2”) long in mantle length. Growth is indeterminate, meaning they continue growing their whole life.

My favorite shots from this weekend in the Keramas

Was great getting in the water with to check out the HMCS Yukon and the Ruby E. 🥶 for me but pretty good conditions to see these ships.

The HMCS Yukon was a Canadian destroyer es**rt, 366 feet long, 40 feet wide, with six decks and over 100 compartments. Now it's one of America's newest and maybe best underwater playhouses. In 2000 it was gutted and cleaned before being sunk in 100 feet (30 m) of water in the Pacific Ocean off Mission Bay in San Diego's "Wreck Alley," only two miles west of the Mission Beach roller coaster.

The Ruby E is now adorned with colorful marine life - but built in 1934 she had first seen service as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter under the name Cyane. Her later occupation was that of a salvage vessel under the name Ruby E. Eventually too old and obsolete for further service above the water she became a perfect candidate as an artificial reef which she’s been serving as since 1989.
