It was 58 years ago today when the unheralded Billy Mills won the gold medal in the Olympic 10,000 meter race in Tokyo. He set a new Olympic record in the process and defeated a stellar field including world record holder Ron Clarke of Australia and Mohamed Gammoudi of Tunisia.
