We lost a good friend, a fellow black belt and a diligent student that loved martial arts. He had a good soul and was kind and very optimistic. He was the first to volunteer to teach seminars or free kids classes in the park. Rest in Peace my friend. RIP Karl Emerson. 4/28/2020

My first teacher - Terumasa Ogawa. I was with him in America 1976-1981. To date the most consistently accurate kicker I have ever seen. I reluctantly left the club in 1981 after the club started leaning towards sport. (The Kick-boxing explosion of the late 70's), I was always about real fighting and defense, not sport. It is very different.
After I left, I spent two years experiencing various styles, I was most comfortable with close range combat gung fu. I started in 1984 until present day. However, in recent years I have occasionally practiced Zen and The Japanese Martial Art of Iaido, the art of drawing the sword, killing, and re-sheathing the sword in just a few fast seconds and in very few movements from multiple positions and angles. Very Cool. I have lived in Japan since 2001 and my first Sensei was part of the reason I was interested in Japan and moved here.
