We are fast moving to fill our entire farm with strawberries..In this video we document the transplanting process for our new 6 beds on the 2nd portion of the farm..

We have a relatively large farm and we started by filling a very small area with only 2 strawberry beds of 150 plants each..In 5 months we have increased our capacity from the initial 2 strawberry beds to 12 beds..We are now well positioned to sell both strawberry runners and fruits..Our journey continues..

By day 40 our newly transplanted strawberry plants had already started to develop runners..We planted them during the rainy season so the growth was very rapid..We had many buyers asking for runners but we decided to keep them for expansion of the farm..

14/12/2022

When we started off, we bought 300 strawberry plants(runners)..Those were enough to cover 2 beds..Each bed has 3 columns and could take upto 150 plants(runners). After 3 months we had over 1500 new strawberry plants which had sprouted as runners from the initial 300 that we had started with..We transplanted those into 3 new beds..This was our first expansion on the farm..

How to irrigate strawberries in 4 simple steps:

1. Avoid overhead sprinklers when watering strawberries. Instead, use a drip irrigation system.

2. It’s important to keep the leaves as dry as possible, as strawberries are susceptible to rot in soggy conditions.

3. Early morning is the best time for effective strawberry irrigation as the plants have all day to dry.

4. It’s always better to water a little less than to overwater and create unhealthy, waterlogged soil.

As we ready our strawberries for fruits, we visited Zihanga LTD to learn about black soldier fly farming and organic Frass fertilizer. Black soldier fly (BSF) frass fertilizer has a high Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium concentration which are needed by strawberries for vegetative growth and fruit production. After the visit and a lesson, from our host Brian we purchased the organic frass fertilizer for our strawberries. It’s crucial that you understand the land, the soil, the availability of water and the challenges that one is likely to face during farming. We are farming and we will share our experiences with you.

You’ll get first hand information and get to learn from our mistakes and successes.
