Before the next tournament, ask this one question.
Tournaments are valuable. Players need real matches to test themselves, handle pressure and learn to compete. We're not against them.
But we see many families spending heavily on entry fees, flights, hotels and kits, while the player comes home with the same weaknesses they left with. A match shows where a player stands. It doesn't fix a weak first touch, low strength, slow acceleration or poor decisions.
Before you commit to the next trip, ask:
What does my child need most right now?
If the answer is technique, strength, speed, mobility or game understanding, that's where the money and time should go first. A player who has built those foundations gets far more from every tournament they attend.
A few things for parents to consider:
Ask your child's coach for an honest assessment of strengths and gaps.
Compare how many training hours your child gets against how many matches they play.
Weigh the cost of a trip against what the same budget could do for their development.
Send them to tournaments when they're ready to benefit, not just to take part.
Competition tests what has been built. Development is how it gets built.
Every family's situation is different, so we'd like to hear from you. Where do you stand: more tournaments or more development?
