A growing dispute has emerged between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance over zoning arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Election, increasing tensions within their political partnership.

ODM is seeking an agreement that would prevent UDA from fielding candidates in Nyanza, Western, and Coastal counties, regions widely regarded as ODM strongholds. In return, ODM would continue cooperating with President William Ruto and his government

UDA has reportedly rejected the proposal, insisting that all political parties should be free to compete across the country.

Speaking in Nairobi on Monday during the ODM Youth Convention at Jamhuri Grounds, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho said ODM would defend its traditional support bases.

He said the party would field candidates for all elective seats in areas including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi and Tana River.

“We will stand with the party through thick and thin. If they come at us, we shall respond. If they pour cash, we shall pour cash too,” Joho said.

He added in Swahili: “Kwani iko nini? Kwani hao pekee yao ndio wako nayo? Wakimwaga tunamwaga. Wakileta, tunaleta. K**a ni mbaya ni mbaya na k**a ni noma ni noma.”

The Nairobi convention is the first in a nationwide series of youth meetings aimed at rebuilding ODM’s support ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party’s Central Committee recently approved what it described as a strong campaign programme to revive and strengthen its support base across the country.

Under the plan, youth conventions will be held in 25 counties. The next major youth event is scheduled for Mombasa on Sunday, April 26, 2026. After these initial gatherings, the party will take a brief two-day hiatus for a joint parliamentary group meeting before announcing subsequent youth-focused activities in the remaining counties.
