Kenya Premier League Statement on Ending Conflicts in East, Central and Western Africa: Football for Peace
At Kenya Premier League, we believe in the unifying power of football—a game that transcends borders, cultures, and differences. As Africa faces conflicts that divide families, displace communities, and hinder progress, we stand in solidarity with all those affected, reaffirming our collective commitment to Football for Peace.
Football has the ability to heal, to inspire, and to bring people together, even in the most difficult times. We, alongside the African football community—players, fans, clubs, leagues, and federations—call upon leaders, communities, and all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, understanding, and peaceful solutions. Our stadiums must be places of joy, not sorrow. Our pitches must be symbols of hope, not hostility.
Through our platforms, partnerships, and programmes, Kenya Premier League, together with the wider African football community, will continue to champion initiatives that foster peace, unity, and social development across the continent. We urge every stakeholder in African football to use their voice and influence to advocate for an Africa where young people can chase dreams, not bullets; where competition remains on the pitch, not in conflict zones.
Let us stand together, play together, and build a future where football serves as a bridge to peace, prosperity, and progress.

The Kenya Premier League Limited deeply mourns the passing of Robert Donald Munro, fondly known as Bob.
Bob played a pivotal role in the formation of the Kenyan Premier League in 2003. As its former Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and member of the Governing Council, he had an immeasurable impact on the growth and development of professional football in Kenya.
He developed forward-thinking policies and established professional practices, overseeing their thorough implementation with meticulous attention. Bob also successfully negotiated lucrative sponsorship agreements that revolutionised the operations of professional football in Kenya, while ensuring financial prudence that supported the league’s sustainable growth and development.
Bob was also the founder of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) in 1987 and Mathare United in 1994—two visionary institutions that he led with remarkable wisdom and unwavering dedication. Under his astute leadership, MYSA organised Kenya’s most well-run grassroots football league, producing administrators, coaches, and players who have significantly shaped the country’s football history. Through his determined stewardship, Mathare United rose to the top flight league in 1999, winning the Moi Golden Cup in 1998 and 2000, and claiming the Kenyan Premier League title in 2008.
Above all, Bob was a mentor to many, touching countless lives with his caring firmness and reassuring kindness.
Bob leaves behind a rich legacy of service to Kenyan football, the communities in Mathare and Eastlands, and the nation as a whole. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
The Kenya Premier League sends its heartfelt condolences to Bob’s wife, Ingrid, their children, MYSA, Mathare United, and the entire Kenyan football fraternity.

Press Statement
Nairobi, Kenya – Tuesday, 8 October 2024:
Taiwo Leo Atieno, a former English professional footballer and Kenyan international turned commercial director, has officially joined Sam Nyamweya’s Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Presidential Campaign as Commercial Director. Atieno’s appointment is set to strengthen the campaign’s focus on restructuring, rebranding, and repositioning Kenyan football, attracting investment into key football assets, and driving grassroots development across the nation.
Atieno, who made history as the first Kenyan to play professional football in the English Football League and the FA Cup, brings decades of experience both on and off the field. With a deep understanding of grassroots football business, management structures, strategic planning, and media strategy, his role as Commercial Director will be crucial in reshaping Kenyan football under Nyamweya’s leadership.
Taiwo Atieno Statement: “I am deeply honoured to join Sam Nyamweya’s campaign for FKF President. I have known Sam for 15 years, and during this time, I have both played under him and worked alongside him. He is truly passionate about football and demonstrated strong leadership in our recent meeting with other candidates. Sam is a natural leader who understands the game, the dynamics between clubs, leagues, federations, government, and FIFA. We have had long and meaningful discussions about where football in Kenya has been, where it is now, and where it needs to go, and we both agree on the steps required to achieve these goals. This role aligns perfectly with my passion for football development in Kenya, particularly at the grassroots level,” said Taiwo Atieno.
“Kenya has immense football talent and potential, and I am committed to helping drive a new era of growth and success for the sport in our country. I will ensure that all aspects of Sam’s team, both during the campaign and post-election, uphold the highest professional standards in corporate governance, restructuring, rebranding, and repositioning the national and professional game of football in Kenya, including the Kenya Premier League. Sam is only running one term and I would encourage the other aspirants to consider joining Sam’s team to form a united federation, as these elections are a distraction from the urgent work needed to progress football in Kenya.”
Former President Nyamweya Statement: “I have known Taiwo since he was a young player and have been immensely impressed by his continued passion, resilience, and vast knowledge. His international networks and dedication to the growth of football make him the ideal person to drive the commercial aspect of our campaign and, post-election, our executive team. Together, we will build a team that will inspire a bright future and leave a legacy where Kenyan football thrives, from grassroots to the professional stage.”
