Day 4: Gisovu to Nyungwe Forest
The hardest day, but the most rewarding. The riders climbed steep switchbacks into Gisovu before plunging into the mist of Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests.
The air cooled. Birdsong replaced roadside calls. Tall trees arched overhead, offering shade and whispers of a thousand years of life. The forest felt sacred cyclists slowed to listen, hikers passed quietly on their way to canopy walks, and even the wheels seemed to hum softer on the trail.
Day 5: The Final Push to Rusizi
The last stretch brought tired muscles, aching shoulders, and dusty smiles. Yet the trail delivered them faithfully to Rusizi, where the Congo Nile Trail ends and the memories begin.
Five days, nearly 250km of dirt and dreams, endless climbs, and even more endless laughter. The Congo Nile Trail stitched together the stories of people, villages, forests, and a river-lake rhythm that flowed alongside them. Kagasi, Kibet, and Huria had gone in search of trails and found a journey.

An idea. A plan. A spark of wanderlust and off they went. Three men, three bikes, and a dream of trails and tarmac across the border. This is the story of , Kibet, and , who traded Nairobi’s bustle for the rugged romance of Rwanda’s legendary Congo Nile Trail.
Day 1–2: Lake Kivu, the Ever-Present Companion
Their journey began in Gisenyi, a lakeside town where the blue of Lake Kivu stretches endlessly. Each morning, fishermen cast their nets against the golden sunrise, while children cheered the passing cyclists with wide grins and waves.
The trail stitched its way along the shoreline dusty paths, rocky climbs, and descents that opened to scenes of the lake shimmering in the afternoon light. Evenings ended with still waters reflecting the sky.
Day 3: Into the Hills
As the trail wound deeper inland, the landscape shifted. Markets bustled with chatter and color baskets balanced on heads, avocados stacked high, bananas slung on bicycles. Soon, rolling farmland unfolded into endless green: coffee and tea plantations, the lifeblood of Rwandan hills.
Here, the trio paused for tastings, sipping coffee that spoke of rich soil and tradition.
