Tupac Shakur died on September 13, 1996, from gunshot wounds sustained during a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas Strip six days earlier. After decades as one of America's most famous unsolved homicides, a Las Vegas jury found former Compton Crips gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis guilty of first-degree murder for orchestrating the attack.

On the evening of September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur and Death Row Records CEO Marion "Suge" Knight attended the Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand. Following the fight, surveillance footage captured Tupac and his entourage attacking Orlando Anderson, a member of the South Side Compton Crips, in the hotel lobby. This assault was retaliation for a previous gang dispute.

Roughly three hours after the hotel brawl, Tupac was riding in the passenger seat of Suge Knight's BMW. At 11:15 p.m., while their car was stopped at a red light at East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, a white Cadillac pulled up alongside them. An occupant inside the Cadillac fired 13 rounds into the BMW using a .40-caliber G***k pistol.

Tupac Shakur was struck four times—twice in the chest, once in the arm, and once in the thigh.Suge Knight escaped with a minor head wound from a bullet fragment.

Tupac was rushed to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. Doctors performed extensive emergency surgeries, including removing his right lung to halt internal bleeding. After fighting for his life on life support for six days, he succumbed to respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary arrest. He was 25 years old.
