The Board of the Committee on Gender Protection in Sports, led by its alternate chair Catherine Ndereba, this week held a fruitful meeting with Board members of FIDA-Kenya in Nairobi.

The meeting explored areas of partnership in promoting safety and security of sportsmen and sportswomen.

What an incredible day in Kwale as we came together to champion gender protection and inclusivity in sports!

From engaging games to powerful conversations, the community showed up with energy, passion, and purpose. Youth, coaches, parents, and stakeholders united to promote safe and equal spaces in sports for all genders.

County sports leadership is one of the key stakeholders in ensuring safe environment for our sports Men and women.

At Diani,Kwale county as part of their sensitization programs,The committee had a very elaborate interactive session with the Sports and Gender leadership for Kwale,Kilifi and Mombasa to discuss how best we can ensure proper implementation of the Sports and Gender policies and to ensure that the Sports Men and Women are able to compete competitively without any Gender based violence

The committee hosted Kwale and Mombasa media Personalities to interactively discuss on Gender reporting in sports as we begin our costal Region sensitization Program.

Today, the Gender Protection Secretariat engaged the under-20s rugby team at their Lenana training camp for a candid and impactful session.
The discussion focused on the mandate of the Gender Protection Implementation Committee, key aspects of SGBV—including consent—and the importance of embracing positive masculinity. The boys also explored the concept of gender, its distinction from biology, and the value of mutual respect. A powerful conversation on the challenges young men face and how they can be part of the solution. # Gender protection in sports

COMBATING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN SPORTS

Yesterday evening, the GPIC CEO Ms Diana Watila and Lorna Tanui Incharge of Outreach and Sensitization held a Crucial inclusive discussion with the County Assembly of Elgeyo Marakwet led by the Speaker, Hon. Lawi Kibire,joined the County Assembly Committee on Sports, Youth Affairs, Culture, Children, and Social Services along with the County Executive departments of Sports, Youth Affairs, Culture, Children, Social Services led by the CEC Hon Michael Kibiwott,Education and Technical Training represented by the CEC Hon Purity Koima and the Gender Advidor to the office the Governor Hon.Winnie Kanda.

The discussions focused on establishing a multi-agency framework to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in sports, ensuring a safe and supportive environment where both men and women can thrive.

Elgeyo/Marakwet County, a sports hub, has sadly witnessed some of the most shocking cases of GBV, with prominent athletes falling victim to these heinous acts. These tragedies underscore the urgent need for action to tackle this menace and protect our athletes.

The meeting identified key issues surrounding gender-based violence in sports and explored potential areas for collaboration between Elgeyo/Marakwet County and GPIC to create an equitable and safe sporting environment for all.

The GPIC has had the profound honour of visiting the home of a remarkable athlete, the late Agnes Tirop, whose life was tragically cut short due to gender-based violence. As the matter still proceeds in court , we must remember that behind every statistic, there is a story, a family, and a community forever altered.
The accused is at large and the court has issued warrants for his arrest. As the GPIC we assured the family that we will do whatever that is within our power to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to book.

This visit serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for change. Together, we must unite our voices to advocate for justice and to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated. Let us stand firm against GBV, support survivors, and work diligently to build a country where every individual, especially athletes who inspire us, can feel safe and valued.
