Thika Swim Academy coach JohnPaul Mungai, popularly known as JP, was in action this morning during a training session at Ruiru Sports Club.
JP is an ASCA Level 5 certified swim coach with extensive experience in competitive swimming. Over the years, he has coached at Nova Pioneer, St. Christopher’s School Karen, Fusion Swim Club, Makini Schools, and Kiota Schools.
He is currently working alongside Coach Charles Nyasae, who recently relocated back to Kenya after spending more than 25 years in the USA. Charles’ last coaching assignment in USA was with North Baltimore Aquatic Club, the renowned swim club associated with swimming legend Michael Phelps.
Thika Swim Academy conducts training sessions at ACK Thika Memorial Church School, Ruiru Sports Club and Thika Sports Club.
This June/July summer holiday, the academy is privileged to host and train competitive swimmers from USA visiting Kenya for the holidays, providing valuable exposure and experience to local swimmers through international interaction and high-level training sessions.

Thika Swim Academy
Thika Swim Academy is a prestigious competitive swimming club based at ACK Thika.
On Friday, Thika Swim Academy, under the leadership of Coach Charles Nyasae, held a successful Team Day that brought together swimmers, coaches, and parents to reflect on the club’s progress since its inception in January 2026.
Speaking during the event, Coach Nyasae appreciated the dedication and support shown by members, parents, and swimmers, noting that Kenya has the potential to produce world-class swimmers. He praised the commitment displayed by the academy community and reaffirmed his promise to maintain high coaching standards within the club.
He emphasized the importance of discipline, consistency in training, proper time management, and teamwork as key pillars for success in competitive swimming.
Coach Nyasae also announced plans for a 10-day residential high-performance swimming training camp in Nanyuki scheduled for August 2026. He said further communication will be shared once arrangements with St. Christopher’s School Nanyuki are finalized.
In addition, he revealed that the academy has imported high-end swimming training equipment from the United States, including a VASA trainer and underwater cameras for stroke analysis, among other advanced training tools aimed at improving athlete performance.
The colorful Team Day event was sponsored by parents, who treated participants to pizzas and refreshments, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere for everyone in attendance.
Thika Swim Academy currently trains at ACK Thika Memorial Church School from Monday to Saturday, with both morning and evening training sessions. The academy also conducts morning training sessions at Ruiru Sports Club and occasionally trains at Thika Sports Club.

200m backstroke and 400m individual medley are his favorite events and continues to lower his times with every meet signaling steady progress.
After representing Kenya at the 10th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Swimming Championship in Kasarani last year, he now sets his sights on Kampala, Uganda for another chance to wear the national colors.

Orca on Top as Kiambu Meet Signals Growth in Swimming
Kiambu Aquatics held a spectacular two-day Inter-Club Swimming Championship on April 18 and 19, 2026 at Juja St. Peter’s School, drawing over 20 teams and more than 300 swimmers. Among the clubs in attendance included Leyians Swimming Club, Rware Swimming Club, Gold Fish Swim School, BE A Pro Swimclub, Visa Dolphin Swim Club, Otters Swim Club, Usiu-A Dolphins Swim Club, Aquapro Swim Club, Swimnation World, Juja St Peters School, Little Fish Swim Club, Aqua Architects Swimming Club, Wadi Degla, Elite Aqua Warriors Swim Club, Poseidon Swimming Club, Aqua Elite Swim Academy-Nakuru, Snook Swimming Club, Jawabu School and The Harpoons Swim Club, reflecting the wide reach of the sport across the region.
In the pool, several swimmers stood out with strong gold medal performances. Tevin Waweru of Moi Educational Center was among the fastest on show, winning the Boys 14–15 50m freestyle in 25.76 seconds. Trish Naishorua of Genesis Sports Limited, took gold in the Girls 16–17 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:51.37. Vahkeinah Leboy of Torpedo Swim Club, claimed the Girls 14–15 50m backstroke in 35.90, while Leon Mwitinof Orca Swim Club, won the Boys 14–15 200m individual medley in 2:45.00. In the younger age group, Nygel Jaeden of Thika Swim Academy, won the Boys 10–11 50m backstroke in 38.96, and Marsellah Tito also of Torpedo, took the Girls 12–13 50m backstroke in 42.63.
Orca Swim Club Kenya finished top in the boys category after collecting the highest number of medals. Pro Swim Academy Kenya came in second, while Thika Swim Academy placed third. In the girls’ category, Orca Swim Club Kenya again finished first, followed by Torpedo Swim Club in second place and Genesis Sports Limited in third.
Kiambu Aquatics Technical Director Nahason Otieno thanked the teams that took part and noted that the level of competition was high. Speaking to the media, he said the standard of swimming in the country continues to improve, with coaches working hard to develop athletes to international level. He added that the federation has lined up coaching clinics, including a partnership with the upcoming American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) in August aimed at supporting local coaches to improve their capacity. Otieno also announced that the Kiambu Aquatics Invitational Swimming Championship will be held on May 23 and 24, 2026 at Potterhouse School Runda giving swimmers another chance to qualify for the Kenya Aquatics National Long Course Championship in Kasarani scheduled on 29 to 31st May, 2026.
