In career growth, there are different rules at different levels. Every stage of your career rewards something different, and the behaviors that got results in one stage can sabotage or hold back growth in the next.

In the early stages of career, competence makes you valuable. In mid-career, clarity makes you powerful, and Senior leadership, leverage makes you influential.

Taking note of the fact that, careers aren’t perfectly linear because some roles require a blend, where technical leaders may remain hands on and founders may move between doing and directing. Still, certain patterns tend to appear as responsibility grows.

Early career stage: This is often the stage of saying yes to almost everything. Joining extra projects, volunteering for tasks just to learn, being present in as many rooms as possible, attending meetings, supporting colleagues, & doing everything possible to accumulate experience. Your effort is visible and energy is an advantage. At this stage, showing capability and reliability earns trust, builds reputation and opens doors.

Mid-career, clarity makes you powerful
In this stage, your inbox is overflowing, responsibility expand beyond what can be done alone, and meetings start to dominate the day. Success now comes from clarity, knowing your strengths, defining and focusing on key priorities, & saying NO to what doesn’t serve the bigger picture of your position. It’s the stage where you let go of saying yes to everything, overextending, and trying to control outcomes personally. Without clarity at this stage, busyness multiplies and gets confused with productivity which slows down your progress.

Senior leadership, leverage makes you influential.
Influence is no longer about what you can do yourself but about shaping decisions, allocating resources wisely, guiding teams, and creating impact through others. At this level, it’s time to release micromanaging, over explaining, being the default problem solver, or feeling responsible for every success and failure.
The real currency is now in judgement, strategic restraint, perspective, & positioning. Leadership presence and decision making define influence, not output.

The challenge is that we stall because we never paused to examine our stage and the result is burnout, frustration, lack of motivation, and plateaued growth. Each stage requires different habits, language, and professional packaging. Behaviors that once built success may now quietly hold it back.

𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬.

Coaching is one of the most misinterpreted helping professions, and that’s where I want to begin.

A trained coach is not a therapist, consultant, mentor, or motivational speaker.

I’m not talking about the way “coach” is used casually today. I mean deep but intentional development across the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.

Sometimes back, while still a coach, I went through 7 months of personal therapy, I’ve also been coached for years. That’s actually how my coaching business was born. & yes, I’ve worked with consultants and mentors too. Each role served a purpose at different points in my life.

What I’ve learned is simple for sure, each role has value, but they are not the same.

Therapists help people heal emotional and mental distress, often by exploring the past, consultants provide expert advice and solutions, motivational speakers inspire through stories and emotion. Mentors share wisdom and learnings from their own experience.

I’m a coach and when I mentor, my hat changes, and so do the principles I operate from. I honor the boundaries of each role and make it know to individuals I’m engaging with.

But who’s a coach? A coach helps you grow without telling you what to do. A coach asks, not tells, Empowers, not fixes. Leads from curiosity & not expertise and/or diagnosis.

Coaching draws out what’s already within you. It’s future-focused, aiming not just for function but for fulfillment. In coaching, you, the coachee is the expert. The coach simply helps you take ownership of your life, decisions, and growth.

A good coaching session doesn’t give you direction, it helps you discover your own. Because coaching isn’t about dependence, it’s about stewardship.

Coaching is a belief in people. This belief is what guides me to listen deeply and ask powerful questions, questions that spark insight, unlock clarity, and inspire action.
I ask because I truly believe your wisdom is more powerful than my advice.

Two weeks ago, during our discussion on emotional intelligence, particularly the self-expression composite where assertiveness falls, someone raised an interesting point. She mentioned that she has come to realize that assertiveness is often misunderstood. People often view it only as standing firm to defend one's rights or expressing feelings openly, and while that’s part of it, it’s not the whole picture. On the other hand, she also noted that it makes recipients perceive assertive individuals as rude or overly aggressive.

Here is how I see it: assertiveness is truth wrapped in love. It should be non-offensive & non-destructive, or even accusatory. Making an application from the see-do-get paradigm shift cycle by Covey, how you see the world influences what you do which leads to the results you get.

If you see assertiveness as simply expressing yourself openly or fighting to be right, it will come off as defensive. Important thing to always consider again is timing. When you wait long enough until frustration takes charge, things will go sideways because the motivation is different. However, if you see assertiveness as communicating truth with kindness and respect, you’ll come across as grounded and considerate.

Assertiveness isn’t about speaking less truth, it’s about expressing that truth with awareness and respect for others. This is where blending assertiveness with empathy becomes essential.

Assertiveness without love and empathy feels like arrogance. Love without truth feels like people-pleasing. True assertiveness blends both, clarity with kindness.

From a personality perspective, we can look at two key dichotomies in how we make decisions: Thinking (T) and Feeling (F). Thinking types tend to focus on logic and facts, while Feeling types are more attuned to emotions and tend to make decisions based on how they feel in a given situation.

For a Thinking (T) type, assertiveness can come across as blunt or overly critical, driven by fairness and the pursuit of objective truth. On the other hand, a Feeling (F) type may prioritize harmony and compassion, which can lead to avoiding conflict entirely or being overly soft, risking being taken advantage of.

Assertiveness is neither aggression nor avoidance, it is clarity with heart. When we lead with respect, time our truth wisely, and stay grounded in both logic and empathy, we give others the gift of understanding us without feeling attacked. That is emotional intelligence in action.

It’s 7 AM at Java, somewhere in the CBD where I’m meeting with a lady I’ve been coaching on self-discovery and career guidance, alongside her parents. One challenge I’ve faced in the past is engaging with parents who already have a set path for their kids, which can make the coaching feel a bit pointless. But since we’re not in the business of just taking money, I don’t always push forward when that happens.

Today, however, it’s different. I’m sitting with these parents, and they tell me I’ve exceeded their expectations. The dad, a senior HR professional, is quite familiar with personality profiling, and he was blown away by how it helped his daughter. They actually heard about me through an extended family member, whose daughter I coached back in May. She’s now studying International Business Admin at Strathmore.

We order breakfast, but since we're at Java, they only want to stick to beverages, fair enough. Sitawachomea leo lakini…. What really stuck with me, though, was when the parents said that their kids experience different versions of them as parents. They’ve grown as parents and have learned to challenge their traditional thinking, especially around course selection, was passed down to them.

They reached out because they wanted to break that cycle, they wanted the daughter to have the freedom to explore her own journey. I was honestly amazed by his self-awareness and openness.

Whether you’re a parent, student, or professional, there’s always something unique for you in this space. This particular coaching program is designed for Form 2s who are still selecting their subjects and Form 4 graduates. It’s KES 40,000 typically taking 3-4 weeks.

Thank you for the recommendations, & reach out today because the best time to start discovering your true path was yesterday. The second best time? Right now. Tomorrow? Hapana😁 let’s challenge the usual.

This past Saturday (Oct 11), we hosted the Productivity Formula Workshop and wow, what a day. 🙌

It was incredibly inspiring to be in a room full of professionals and leaders from all walks of life, all curious about one thing: how to rethink productivity in a way that actually works for them not against them.

We explored how productivity isn’t just about doing more, faster. It’s about doing what matters, in a way that aligns with your purpose, your wiring (nature), and your lived experience (nurture). Because the way we work is shaped by who we are and that affects not just how we show up, but how we lead and collaborate.

Productivity isn’t a solo journey and this workshop proved that.

Big thank you to everyone who showed up, shared openly, and made it such a meaningful experience. Here's to unlocking better focus, flow, and alignment. 💡

Facebook just surfaced a memory from a year ago when I was facilitating a leadership training on cultivating a feedback-driven culture.

This weekend, I’m excited to carry that momentum forward in The Productivity Formula Workshop. We’ll be exploring five key pillars of sustainable productivity, including one that often goes unspoken: embracing discomfort. We’ll look at strategic ways to balance the necessary pain of growth with the motivation of progress, turning discomfort into a deliberate tool for resilience, clarity, and performance.

05/10/2025

One of the key ingredients for unlocking true productivity is clarity, because clarity fuels focus.

However, fear often stands in the way of this clarity. Whether it’s the fear of failure, the fear of the unknown, or feelings of powerlessness, these fears manifest in many ways, often showing up as self-doubt and many others.

The secret to overcoming these fears isn’t about trying to eliminate them, it’s about confronting them head-on.

The more we face and accept these fears, the more our ability to maintain clear judgment even in stressful moments grows. Life will always throw challenges our way, but being extraordinary is a skill that can be cultivated.

This is just a glimpse of what we’ll explore at “The Productivity Formula Workshop” on October 11th, 2025.

I’ll be your facilitator on this transformative journey to greater clarity, confidence, and focus.

Looking forward to seeing you there, if you haven’t signed up, please do.

Most people confuse productivity with doing more. It could be more tasks, hours, or even pressure.

But true productivity is the intentional alignment of your actions with your core values and priorities.

It’s knowing what actually matters and having the clarity, energy, and focus to give it your best.

Without that alignment, we end up chasing busy work, burning out, and feeling unfulfilled… even after a packed day.

That’s why managing your attention, decisions and energy is the real game-changer. Because when you stop reacting to everything around you, and start focusing on what’s essential, everything shifts.

You need a system that helps you show up fully, without burning out. If you’re tired of doing more but getting nowhere, or rather, you feel like you’re moving in cycles, this is your invitation to reset.

~Rewire your patterns.
~Reclaim your energy.
~Refocus your attention.

We all want to be more productive, consistent, to feel in control of our time, focused on the right things, and making real progress in life and work. But somehow, the days keep getting away from us.

We start the week or projects with energy, then lose steam. We stay “busy,” but not really moving forward. We try every new app, planner, or technique but nothing sticks. You said you’ll do something in January and now we’re in the last quarter.

If that sounds like you, you're not alone.
That’s exactly why we created the Productivity Formula Workshop, for people who want to do more, but feel stuck, overwhelmed, or scattered.

This isn't another time management seminar or motivational talk. It’s a practical, hands-on session where we dig into:

- Why we procrastinate, and how to stop (it’s not just about discipline)
-How to manage your attention instead of just your time
- Ways to build consistency — even when you don’t “feel like it”
- How to stay focused, finish what you start, and actually make progress

You’ll walk away with simple tools that actually work, because they’re built around how your brain and habits function in the real world.

This workshop is for you if:
~You’re constantly distracted, overwhelmed, or jumping between tasks
~You start projects with excitement but ~
rarely finish them
~You’re always “on,” but don’t feel like you’re getting anywhere
~You want to work smarter without burning out
~You're ready to finally create the habits and systems that lead to results
~ You’re struggling to say NO

The truth is: Productivity isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what matters, with clarity, focus, and energy that lasts.

If you're ready to make that shift, join us.
