History of Kenyan Sports

Before Kenya became a global athletics powerhouse, nine men carried its name to Vancouver.

In 1954, Kenya made its first appearance at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Canada.

The team had just nine athletes.

Among them was Lazaro Chepkwony, alongside other pioneers including Nyandika Maiyoro, Korigo Barno, Maboria Tesot and Musembi Mbathi.

But there is an important detail many people miss.

Vancouver was not actually their first international competition.

Before travelling to Canada, members of the Kenyan team competed at White City Stadium in London on 9 July 1954, facing athletes from Britain.

Chepkwony ran the six-mile race, and the Kenyan performance attracted considerable attention. The Star identifies him as the first Kenyan athlete to compete in an international event.

World Athletics also identifies Chepkwony and Nyandika Maiyoro as the first Kenyan distance runners to achieve international success in 1954.

Then came Vancouver.

The nine-man team competed across track and field, including hurdles, relays, distance races, high jump and javelin. They returned without a medal, but their appearance established something much more important:
The Kenyan running story did not begin with Olympic gold.
It began with nine men in 1954.
