Principles of Power Generation in Taekwondo Poomsae
Power in Taekwondo Poomsae is not produced by the strength of a single muscle. It is generated through the coordinated action of the entire body.
The process begins by relaxing unnecessary muscle tension through proper breathing, allowing the body to move with greater speed and efficiency. At the moment the technique is executed, the practitioner briefly holds the breath to create intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). This stabilizes the trunk, increases the force applied to the ground, and effectively generates ground reaction force (GRF).
The force produced is then transferred through the kinetic chain, flowing from the feet to the legs, pelvis, trunk, shoulders, and finally to the striking or blocking limb. Throughout this process, whole-body coordination is essential. The balanced movement of both legs and both arms initiates efficient pelvic motion, while the rotational energy generated by the pelvis is further amplified by the snapping action of the arms.
At the same time, body weight is transferred naturally in the direction of movement, allowing mass to contribute to the technique and increasing its impact. Maximum power is achieved when limb movement, heel placement of the stepping foot, and the completion of breathing occur simultaneously.
Immediately after the technique is completed, the body releases unnecessary tension and returns to a neutral, balanced state, enabling a smooth and rapid transition into the next movement.
Ultimately, maximum power in Taekwondo Poomsae is achieved through the integration of muscle relaxation and contraction, breathing and intra-abdominal pressure, ground reaction force, the kinetic chain, body-weight transfer, and whole-body coordination. IK PIL KANG
