I am deeply saddened by the horrible accident this past Easter weekend which resulted in the tragic death of one cyclist and the injury of another.

I send my deepest condolences to Mr. Per Undheim’s family and loved ones for this devastating loss. Mr. Undheim was the physiotherapist of the late Mr. Bobby Nunes, a pioneer and founder of the Cayman Islands Cycling Associations. Mr. Nunes thought very highly of Mr. Undheim.

I also extend best wishes to Andy, the other cyclist, and pray he be blessed with good health and a quick recovery.

As a former competitive cyclist, I know the risks, but Cayman’s roads are becoming more dangerous. Drunk driving is out of control, there’s hardly any traffic enforcement, and we’ve got too many cars, too few reliable transport options, and way too many inexperienced drivers.

There’s no reason why Cayman’s roads can’t be a better, safer place for both cyclists and vehicles to share.

It’s time for real change. Safer roads. Shared respect for all who use the roads.

We need to have an educational safety campaign that relates to cycling and pedestrian safety in our communities.

Many use bicycles as a means of transportation which helps reduce the high traffic congestion we face today in Cayman, yet they are become targets by out of control, lawless drivers under the influence of alcohol or just speeding.

As Mr. Orrett Connor stated in a recent Cayman Compass article, I support updates to the Cayman Islands’ Road Code to follow the UK’s lead in prioritizing cycling safety and protecting our most vulnerable road users — pedestrians, joggers and cyclists. They have equal rights on the road, and drivers must give them space and show more care. 📸

It is an honour for Craig’s Cycles to congratulate and support Nathaniel Forbes - the talented, young cyclist who will be representing the Cayman Islands at the Pan-Am Cycling Championships in Brazil next week. On May 24, he will be contesting the under-23 men’s road race. Many thanks to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Heritage, Cayman Islands Cycling Association, and continuous support from family and friends for making this happen. And of course, extra special thanks to his dedicated cycling coach, Mr. Ken Gokool. Best of luck !!!

For the third year, Craig’s Cycles was honoured to partner with East End Primary School to reward students with 10 brand new bicycles! These bicycles are a symbol of their hard work and commitment to achieving Perfect Attendance during the 2022-2023 school year. I hope they bring these students much joy and continued motivation.

Thank you, Dr. O’Neil Duncan, Principal, and all the staff of East End Primary School for making this happen. Craig’s Cycles is proud to support this effort with 10 free helmets to make sure we keep safety first!
