Table tennis is as popularly played as soccer! But seems to be in soccer's lofty sometimes 4-sided shadow(on the field).
However, it is very approachable and intially doesn't take physical fitness.
True, there is indoor soccer(small goals) somewhat and a ball on the road between friends. Both sports are wildly enjoyable and I've played both.
You can approach ping-pong any way you want as long as you can play efffectively by the rules i.e. make points - your opponent could matter here, seriously.
I love the ITTF(International Table-tennis Association's) Coaching Level 1 bk's approach in giving one a BOUNCER CHART. After completing 13 exercises aside from the board, you will find that you rarely miss when finally board-side!
I still do them even though experienced somewhat in the game. Like milk you always need it. They have helped me keep off cobwebs when I'm not at a facility.
Table tennis is FUN and discipline and money(pro equipment, manuals, dvds, etc.)
One of my goals is to have my own facility.

MEDITATIONS:
1. Long serve (to white lines) to corner backhand - attack corner forehand
2. backhand backspin serve to backhand; perhaps forehand
3. short serve
4.fast spin serve to backhand then attack
5. short side-spin serves - is it or acc. to what side
6. no spin serve suddenly
7. Serves based on watching the opponent - short if far from table; long if close.
8. Be patient and Mix the spins - Espn
9. Play to win. Play to entertain. - Espn
10. Return the ball. Return ball away fr. opp. Expect it returned.
11. When out of position, off-balance, play a safe shot usu. to center.
12. Pt. by Pt. 1 pt. at a time.
