The Central Province Tournament of the SLSCA Individual Chess Championship was held this weekend.

We had a very successful tournament with 30 of our players (out of 50 who were selected to play in the provincial event) successfully qualifying for the All-Island Tournament. Congratulations!

*Buddhimal Bandara* became the Champion in the Under 15 category by scoring 5.5/6 points.

*Deelaka Meegahakumbura* scored 6/6 points and became the Equal Champion in the Under 13 category.

*Yovindu Binal Premarathne* also scored 6/6 and became the Equal Champion in the Under 09 category.

*Kenuth Nawarathne* scored 5.5/6 points and finished the event tied for first in the Under 11 category.

We wish everyone all the best for the All Island competition.

20th july 2024 some special tournaments were organized by CFSL to commemorate FIDE's 100th anniversary and International Chess Day. It also coincided with a successful attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most chess games played in 24 hours.

In the Kandy Division of the above "FIDE 100" tournament, the following players performed brilliantly to finish among the top 10.

*Under 09*
Champion - Anuja Alagiyawanna 9/10 points
Second Place - Manuka Jayawardana 7/10 points
4th Place - Vonal Karunarathne 7/10 points
5th Place - Yovindu Premarathne 7/10 points
6th Place - Menuja Jayaweera 7/10 points

*Under 10*
8th Place - Tinura Mawilmada 5.5/10 points

*Under 11*
6th Place - Senumitha Karunathilake 7.5/10 points
7th Place - Kenuth Nawarathne 7.5/10 points

*Under 13*
6th Place - Deelaka Meegahakumbura 6/10 points

*Gangul Wimalarathne* and *Januga Meddegoda* are representing Sri Lanka in the ongoing Western Asian Youth Chess Championship being held in Waskaduwa.

In the 2023/24 National Youth Championship Finals concluded last weekend, our *Kulasara Gangul Wimalarathne* scored 8/10 points and won 4th place (out of 514 players who were selected to play the finals from all parts of the country) in the Under 11 category.

As a result of this achievement, Gangul was selected for the National Youth Pool and for the National Chess Academy. Also, he qualified to play in the Special Selection Tournament which will determine who will represent Sri Lanka in international events in the year 2024.

We congratulate Gangul on his brilliant performance and wish him all the best for the upcoming important tournaments.

Under 09 Category;

In the Under 09 category of the National Youth Championship, our *Januga Meddegoda* and *Anuja Alagiyawanna* won merit awards by scoring 7.5/10 and 7/10 points respectively. This again was a very tough event as they had to compete with 685 players who were selected as best in every district.
