The Legacy of Antonian Rugby
Rugby at St. Anthony’s College began in the late 1950s, a time when the sport was still new and unfamiliar to Antonians. The first team was formed in 1956, but it was only in 1961 that real enthusiasm for the game grew, with more boys taking to the field and multiple teams being formed. Every season tells a story. Some fade quietly, but a few leave a mark that stays for years. 2023 was one of those for Antonian Rugby.
Under the leadership of Sahan Keerthisiri, the Eagles in maroon and double blue soared through Group A with heart, grit and purpose. The journey began with a strong win over St. Joseph’s, setting the tone for the weeks ahead. The clash against Wesley turned into a classic, a game that went down to the wire, and the boys held their nerve to edge out a 30–29 thriller. Then came the moment every Antonian remembers a commanding 34–17 win against St. Thomas’, lifting the Rector’s Trophy with pride and also getting the ticket to second round to be among the top 4 teams.
Not every match ended in our favor. A last-minute try saw us fall just short against D. S. Senanayake College. But that moment didn’t break us. It built us. That same resilience carried the team into the Super Round, finishing proudly among the top four schools in the country.
For the players, it was a season of growth, belief and character. For the supporters, it was a reminder of the spirit that has defined Antonian Rugby for generations. 2023 will be remembered not just for the victories, but for the fight, the discipline and the pride of wearing maroon and double blue.

First introduced in 2004 during the 150th Jubilee of St. Anthony’s College, the Rev. Fr. Angelo Rosati Trophy has become a proud tradition in schools’ rugby.
With deep gratitude to S. Thomas’ College for honoring this legacy and contesting the trophy with us, this annual clash stands as a symbol of respect, rivalry, and shared history between two great rugby schools.
