St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy clinched the championship title of the Junior National Boxing Tournament 2014 which concluded a couple of weeks ago at the Royal College Boxing Ring. The Kandy team sealed six gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals. The medal winners for them were Bhahiya Navod (46-49kg, gold), Sanjeewa Joseph (49-52kg, gold), Shehan Medawaththa (64-69kh, gold), Malinga Wickremasinghe (52-56kg, gold), Mithun Kapukotuwa (69-75kg, gold), Malinda Karunarathna (75-81kg, gold), Heshan Lakmal (56-60kg, silver), Ashan Ariyasinghe (60-64kg, silver), P. Attanayake (81-91kg, bronze) and Sulochana Atauda (91kg, bronze). Teams from Kandy dominated the Junior Nationals as Trinity College and Vidyartha College grabbed two gold medals each to take second and third places respectively. Talking to the ‘Sunday Island’ the captain of the St. Sylvester’s squad, Sanjeewa Joseph said his team has been taking part in this tournament for a long time and he knew that his team would to well.
"I am pleased that our team did really well in this tournament. We took part in this tournament last year as well so I knew we would perform well this year. Our players fought very well right throughout the tournament and credit goes to them for the effort they put in, but, I must say some of the decisions made by the referees were questionable. Amid all these things our players kept their focus and got the result that we desired, so I am very happy for them," he said.
The captain also revealed that his boys had started practicing about two months prior to the tournament and it had helped them immensely during the tournament.
"We started practicing about two months before the championship. Whatever we did in our training sessions, we did very well. It was hard practicing, but it certainly helped us in the tournament. Practicing in the ring made sure we box well in the ring, it also improved our mentality and the fighting spirit. In my opinion the most important thing in any sport is the mental and physical preparation and we did it quite well I believe," he added.
He also didn’t forget to thank his coach D.M. Jayawardene for supporting them and sharing his experiences with them.
"Our coach is D.M. Jayawardene. He is the one who really inspired us to win this tournament and taught us so many things about the sport. He is very experienced and we were lucky to be trained by him and I hope he is happy with our victory," he told of the coach.
Talking about the future of his team Joseph said that most of his boxers will not be eligible to take part in this tournament next year.
"I think more than half of our boxers will not be able to box next year as it is there last year at school, but, if you want to be a competitive boxing school for a long time, you always have to build a team for the future. I think that is what we have to do right now and I am confident that there will be a better team next year," he said.
