Volunteer divers of The Pearl Protectors dived for the 4th time to remove discarded/ghost fishing nets found at Butterfly rock reef in Batticaloa. The dive was a success as the divers collected 90% of the nets which had entangled the reef for the past decade.
A total of 35kg discarded nets were removed. This included lead weights of the nets and mostly nylon nets (madel nets)

Special thanks goes out to the 14 volunteers of The Pearl Protectors who joined in for the dive.
This cleanup by far is the largest underwater cleanup conducted in the Eastern Province. Subsequent perception survey of the local fishermen was also conducted along with the cleanup.
Collected nets were handed over to Waste Less Arugambay which uses the discarded nets for recycling and upcycling purposes. Lead weights of the nets will be upcycled to make diving weights.
The expedition will continue to make our seabeds cleaner
