Welfare is not a Western invention.

Sri Lanka’s long relationship with elephants includes knowledge passed through generations of people working closely with them. That experience deserves a place in conversations about animal care.

Respecting that knowledge does not mean accepting every practice uncritically. The animal’s condition and daily treatment remain the test, whether a method is traditional or modern.

At Vonfidel Ranch, this responsibility begins with our horses. Knowing each horse well means noticing when something changes and adjusting its care or workload accordingly.

A short activity, a non-residential trail ride, a structured horsemanship stay and a genuine riding holiday are not interchangeable. Each requires a different level of screening, horse–rider matching, preparation and flexibility.

Our new guide sets out the practical questions riders and travel advisers should ask about experience, tack, terrain, weather, pace, field authority and welfare before booking. It is deliberately useful beyond Vonfidel Ranch: a good guide should help a rider choose well, even if the right answer lies elsewhere.

Riding holidays at Vonfidel Ranch are planned around horse availability, rider suitability and field conditions—not a fixed itinerary sold before those details are understood.

We work at low volume and confirm each enquiry individually. Before dates are confirmed, we consider riding experience, confidence, weather and the horses themselves. The riding is then shaped by what is sensible on the day.

Late light on the water at Punanai

Near the end of a long ride, we took the horses into the Punanai tank, an inland reservoir. The horses remained willing, the rider was capable, and there was enough daylight to enter and leave the water without hurry.

This was an unplanned part of that evening’s ride, not a promised part of every stay. Routes and pace depend on the horses, riders and conditions on the day.

And then there are the ones you remember by how they ended.

A long evening out, the light beginning to go, and one last run through the water before heading home.

No great ceremony but a very happy horse, a very happy rider, and absolutely no hurry to be anywhere else.

After the miles, the heat and the dust, the horses get their time. No itinerary. No rush to move on. Just a quiet few minutes in the shallows before heading home.
