On Friday, June 19, 2026, Sister Aid Liberia (SALI), with support from the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), convened a National Multi-Stakeholders’ Dialogue on Women’s Access to Affordable Health Care, Agriculture, and Access to Finance, access to farm to market and Trade Opportunities at the European Union Delegation in Monrovia.

Held under the project, “From Dialogue to Action: Advancing Women’s Priorities Through Political Accountability and Legislative Engagement,” the dialogue brought together lawmakers, government officials, political parties, development partners, civil society organizations, women leaders, and sector experts to examine critical issues affecting the lives, livelihoods, and wellbeing of women across Liberia.

The dialogue was informed by findings from NIMD’s nationwide assessment on women’s priorities, which identified access to affordable healthcare, agricultural development, finance, and trade opportunities as among the most pressing concerns facing women. Through a series of presentations and interactive discussions, participants explored the structural barriers that continue to hinder women’s access to essential services and economic opportunities, while identifying practical policy and legislative actions to address these challenges.

A key highlight of the dialogue was the powerful testimonies shared by women working directly within the agriculture, health, and trade sectors. Madam Nyamah Dunbar, CEO of SANKOFA Farm, provided valuable insights into the realities facing women farmers, including limited access to financing, markets and agricultural inputs. Madam Jodie Reid Seton, Executive Director of LIFE and a woman in the construction sector, spoke on the importance of farm-to-market road connectivity for women farmers. She emphasized that women bear a significant burden when agricultural produce spoils due to poor road conditions and limited access to markets. She called on the Ministries of Agriculture and Public Works to prioritize the construction and rehabilitation of feeder road networks, as well as the provision of storage facilities for women farmers. She further advocated for gender-responsive infrastructure that addresses the specific needs of local farmers, particularly women. Madam Naomi Tulay Solanke, Executive Director of Community Healthcare Initiative, highlighted the alarming rate of maternal mortality and the persistent gaps in healthcare delivery that continue to affect women and girls across Liberia. Madam Saybah Dunyan, President of the Women Cross-Border Traders Association, spoke candidly about the challenges women traders face throughout their business journey - from accessing loans and financial services to navigating border crossings and regional trade systems. Their testimonies underscored both the resilience of Liberian women and the urgent need for responsive policies and investments that address these longstanding barriers.

The dialogue was further enriched by the participation of Hon. Dr. Alexander Nuetah, Minister of Agriculture, who engaged participants on the current state of Liberia’s agricultural sector and highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry to address challenges affecting farmers and agricultural productivity. He also shared information on upcoming initiatives aimed at strengthening the sector and improving outcomes for farmers, particularly women, while expressing his commitment to collaborating with stakeholders working to advance women’s economic empowerment.

Throughout the dialogue, participants engaged in robust discussions and direct exchanges with policymakers and sector leaders, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing solutions that improve women’s access to healthcare, agriculture, finance, and trade opportunities. The dialogue concluded with key recommendations that will contribute to the development of a Multi-Stakeholder Action Agenda to guide advocacy, policy engagement, and legislative action on women’s priorities.

At Sister Aid Liberia, we believe that meaningful change begins by listening to women, amplifying their voices, and ensuring that their priorities inform policy and decision-making processes. By bringing together diverse stakeholders and centering women’s lived experiences, we continue to champion a more inclusive and equitable Liberia where women can fully participate, thrive, and contribute to sustainable national development.

The activity falls under the Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP), co-funded by the European Union in Liberia and the Embassies of Embassy of Ireland in Liberia and Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia, managed by UNDP and implemented by NIMD Liberia and UN Women Liberia.

Sister AID Liberia applauds over 40 lawmakers, along with the House Speaker, Honorable Richard Nagbe Koon and the Senate Pro-Tempore, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, for committing to the swift passage of the War and Economic Crime Court and the Anti-Corruption Court bills in their current forms, during a two-day high level session with members of committees of the House in Buchana City, Grand Bassa County from June 12-13, 2026.

SALI also commends Cllr. Dr. Jallah A. Barbu and his team at the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court Liberia (OWECC-Liberia)
for their dedicated leadership and partnership with civil society actors, including Sister AID Liberia, the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), and the Center for Transparency and Accountability (CENTAL) in Liberia, among others during the ongoing legislative engagements, technical orientation, lobbying, and influencing policy advocacy actions for the passage of the mentioned bills.

The chorus consensus across all sectors and classes in Liberia and the diaspora is that the War and Economic Crime Court and Liberia Anti-Corruption Court bills are long overdue, urgently needed, and the onus is on lawmakers to leverage the window of opportunity Liberia now has to urgently address historical injustice and pervasive acts of corruption.

As a Technical Committee member, Sister AID Liberia reaffirms its commitment to working with OWECC-Liberia to mobilize greater support for the passage of these crucial justice mechanisms and the full implementation.

Celebrating 5 Years of Partnership and Impact with support from the Government of Ireland.

In the historic city of Edina, Grand Bassa County, one of Liberia’s oldest settlements, founded in 1832, we welcomed the Irish Parliamentarians Cathy Bennett and Joe O’Reilly, the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia, and UN Women Liberia for a landmark mission visit. Joined by Peace Hut women, women leaders, local authorities, traditional leaders, male champions, and community stakeholders, we gathered to mark five years of the project “Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance and Peacebuilding.”

Liberia’s post-conflict journey has been defined by extraordinary courage, and nowhere is that more evident than in the rise of women as peacebuilders and governance leaders. Once pushed to the margins of decision-making and bearing the heaviest burdens of civil war, women across Grand Bassa County are now leading from the center mediating disputes, shaping local governance, and anchoring their communities in dialogue. Guided by UN Security Council Resolution 1325, this partnership has helped transform Peace Huts into trusted spaces of justice, reconciliation, and community-led peace — a testament to what inclusive, women-centered peacebuilding truly looks like in practice.

The testimonies shared in Edina captured the heart of this work. Peace Hut women spoke of lives and communities transformed. Women leaders shared bold, inspiring stories of hard-won recognition and impact. Their voices carried one undeniable truth, when women lead, communities heal and peace endures. As we honor this five-year milestone, we celebrate the resilience and leadership of Liberian women and reaffirm our commitment to a future where every woman’s voice shapes the peace and governance of her community.

SALI is grateful to the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia for its longstanding support of our work through UN Women Liberia.

What happens when there are more gender-just political parties in Liberia?

“The country does better in all aspects of development,” remarked Alexander B. Cummings, Political Leader of the ANC, during an Intra-Party Gender Dialogue convened by Sister AID Liberia (SALI). Similar sentiments were echoed by ANC Vice Chair for Political Affairs, Madam Victoria Koikoi, and leaders of the CMC, who emphasized that women play a critical role in shaping policies and programs that improve the well-being of families and communities.

Today, Sister AID Liberia facilitated separate Intra-Party Gender Dialogues with the Alternative National Congress and the Citizen Movement for Change. During the sessions, SALI presented findings from a rapid political party capacity assessment and shared key outcomes from a nationwide consultation conducted by the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD).

The dialogues provided a platform for party leaders to reflect on barriers affecting women and to identify practical actions to strengthen advocacy around women’s access to quality and affordable healthcare, support for women-led agricultural initiatives, farm-to-market connectivity, trade, and economic empowerment.

These engagements form part of the “Advancing Women’s Political and Civic Engagement in Liberia” initiative, implemented by Sister AID Liberia under the Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP).

This engagement has shown us that, when political parties become more inclusive, women are better positioned to influence decisions, communities become stronger, and democracy works better for everyone.

This project is managed by UNDP Liberia, implemented in partnership with UN Women Liberia, and the NIMD Liberia , with support from the European Union in Liberia, Embassy of Ireland in Liberia , and theEmbassy of Sweden in Monrovia
