Access to eye care remains a critical issue for the elderly, particularly for women aged 50-80, as highlighted by the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB, 2012). In Liberia, there is a significant gap in understanding the challenges faced by women in this age group, particularly from the perspective of demand-side barriers.
Mezo J. Looh, with over a decade of experience in the eye health industry, has conducted extensive research that elucidates the key factors contributing to these access barriers. His study, which spans three counties in Liberia—Margibi, Grand Bassa, and Sinoe—provides valuable insights that are applicable across various cultural contexts within the country.
The findings of this research are poised to attract the attention of the Ministry of Health’s Eye Service Division, stakeholders, service providers, and health students. By shedding light on the critical factors affecting access to eye care for older women, this research aims to inform and guide the development of targeted interventions and projects that enhance women’s access to essential eye health services.

The New Sight Eye Center Ophthalmic Training Program continues to impact the eye health industry profoundly. On Friday, November 24th, 2023, we celebrated the graduation of four dedicated ophthalmic nurses from this transformative program.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Joseph Kekulah, National Manager of Eye Health at the Ministry of Health, highlighted the critical need for well-trained eye health professionals. He adds that with a scarcity of ophthalmologists and the high costs associated with their training, an effective solution lies in empowering mid-level eye health workers.
The New Sight Eye Center’s commitment to bridging this gap represents a steadfast commitment to elevating the mid-level eye health workforce.
The Ophthalmic Training Program commends the graduates for their unwavering dedication to their studies, and today celebrates their successful completion of the program thus increasing mid-level eye health human resources.
Finally, the keynote speaker, Hon. Sheike Koyateh, reminded our graduates that their graduation shapes a brighter future for eye healthcare. He further stated that their passion and expertise will continue to impact countless lives positively.
Congratulations to our remarkable graduates!
