INDIVIDUALITY SERIES.
Mastering Individuality: Too Much Expectation Breeds Disappointment.
Tagline: Nobody Owes You Anything on This Planet.

By Koantlane Molefi.

This past Sabbath afternoon at Maseru SDA Church, we gathered for a solemn and moving programme that focused on widows within the church community. The conversations were deeply reflective, honest, and at times, painfully real. As we listened to the stories and experiences shared, a key lesson emerged—the harsh burden of expectations often leaves us emotionally bankrupt and disappointed. This is not just the story of widows. It is the story of many. And it led me to revisit a principle at the heart of the INDIVIDUALITY Series: Nobody owes you anything on this planet.

We live in a time when dependency—emotional, financial, or relational—has become so normalized that we barely notice how much we lean on others for our own peace and stability. We expect people to check on us, to understand us without communication, to show up for us at every milestone. And while some do, many don’t. Then we spiral into disappointment, bitterness, or even spiritual fatigue.

But here’s a liberating truth: Expectations not grounded in mutual commitment or covenant will almost always let you down. That’s why it’s wiser to build inner resilience than to bet your peace on the assumption that others will carry you. Proverbs 24:10 states it clearly: “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” This is not a rebuke—it is a call to build inner fortitude.

Sometimes you may feel the need to distance yourself from certain individuals, to walk away quietly, or even to block contacts—not from a place of hatred, but from a place of preserving your peace and mastering your journey. That’s okay. It is not bitterness. It is boundary. And boundary is part of maturity.

I know it hurts when you’re the one always reaching out. When your efforts aren’t reciprocated. When you carry others through storms, only to be left alone in your own. But friend, hear this: it is better to rise above the pain and minister unto others. The very act of service can heal your wounds.

Instead of craving love, be the love. Instead of expecting support, be the support. This is the divine paradox of life: we are healed as we help. We are strengthened as we serve.

The widows who stood up this Sabbath weren’t just grieving—they were ministering. Their resilience spoke volumes. And in their strength, I saw the power of choosing to live beyond expectation. They had every reason to feel owed something by life. Yet there they were, uplifting others. A lesson for all of us.

You don’t need to be a Christian or religious to understand this principle. This is human. This is universal. Whether in personal life or corporate circles, you must anchor your self-worth not in applause or recognition, but in purpose.

So today, release the people you expect too much from. Forgive those who disappointed you. Fortify your strength in the Lord. And remember, ministering unto others is not a sign of having it all together—it’s a way of staying together.
