Why do we call ourselves Preventive Wellness Partners at MobiGym?

Because we believe strength training isn't only about what you can do today. It's also about preparing your body for the moments when you might not be able to exercise.

Think about surgery, an injury, illness or a temporary reduction in mobility.

Even relatively short periods of inactivity can lead to significant losses of muscle and strength.

An interesting new study, highlighted by exercise scientist Dr. Jackson Fyfe in his newsletter, demonstrates the importance of building muscle reserves BEFORE those situations arise.

Researchers followed younger and older women who completed four weeks of supervised resistance training before eight days of leg immobilization.

The results?

💪 Muscle size increased by 6.7%.
💪 Knee extension strength increased by 15.2%.
⚠️ During immobilization, participants still experienced muscle and strength losses similar to those who hadn't trained beforehand.

But because they started with more muscle, they had more muscle remaining afterwards.

This is an important lesson for longevity.

At MobiGym, we don't simply focus on today's workout. Our personalized, science-informed approach is designed to help you:

✅ Build and maintain strength as you age.
✅ Monitor meaningful indicators of physical function.
✅ Improve your long-term physical capacity.
✅ Support independence and quality of life.

We believe preventive wellness means investing in your health while you're still feeling well, rather than waiting until a problem appears.

And you don't need to become a bodybuilder to start investing in your muscle reserve!

🙏 Many thanks to Dr. Jackson Fyfe for bringing attention to this research and for the excellent visual explaining the findings.

🦴 Osteoporosis: it's not just about having fragile bones. It's also about preventing falls.

Today, October 20, is World Osteoporosis Day.

As we age, maintaining bone density matters. But so does being strong enough to get out of a chair, maintain our balance, recover from a stumble, and continue doing the activities we love.

The science is encouraging.

The LIFTMOR clinical trial demonstrated that supervised progressive resistance and impact training can improve bone density and physical function in postmenopausal women with low bone mass.

A major Cochrane review also found that exercise programmes reduced the rate of falls in older adults by approximately 23%.

At MobiGym, this is why our approach to longevity training goes beyond conventional fitness.

We work on strength, balance, mobility, and functional performance with personalized training and regular assessments.

Our sessions are designed to fit busy lives, typically in 25–45 minutes, by appointment. We can also help clients identify suitable activities between sessions.

The goal is not simply to lift more weight.

It's to build the physical capacity that helps you stay confident, capable, and independent as you age.

If you have osteoporosis, training needs to be adapted to your medical history and fracture risk, and can complement your healthcare plan.

📍 We recently moved to 55 Rue de Luxembourg, Bertrange.

Weight loss should not mean losing muscle.

A new International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) position stand reinforces a key principle for body recomposition:

When you are in a calorie deficit, resistance training and sufficient protein are two of the most important tools for protecting lean mass.

The position stand notes:
• Around 1.2–1.6 g protein/kg/day is appropriate for the general population during weight loss.
• Around 1.6–2.2 g/kg/day combined with resistance training may better support muscle anabolism.
• Very aggressive calorie restriction may increase lean-mass loss and does not appear to offer a long-term advantage over more moderate approaches.
• Intermittent fasting is not inherently superior to continuous calorie restriction when overall energy intake is comparable.

For MobiGym, the practical message is simple:

The goal is not just to make the number on the scale smaller.

It is to reduce fat while preserving — and where possible building — the muscle that supports strength, function, metabolism and long-term independence.

That is why our body-recomposition approach combines progressive resistance training with realistic nutrition targets and regular reassessment.

What tells us more about long-term health: cardiovascular fitness or strength?

A new prospective UK Biobank study followed 10,462 people who were cancer-free at baseline and later received a cancer diagnosis.

Both estimated VO₂max and grip strength were associated with survival — but cardiorespiratory fitness showed the stronger relationship.

Compared with the study median:
• Low estimated VO₂max (12.5 mL/kg/min) was associated with 59% higher mortality.
• Higher estimated VO₂max (44.5 mL/kg/min) was associated with 29% lower mortality.
• Lower grip strength was also associated with higher mortality, but the relationship was weaker and appeared to plateau.

The important point: this is an observational study. It shows association, not proof that improving either measure by a given amount will directly reduce mortality.

For MobiGym, it reinforces why we assess more than one dimension of physical fitness.

Cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength provide different — and complementary — information about healthspan.

Can strength and cardio improve together?

A recent meta-analysis in the Journal of Sports Sciences found that concurrent resistance + endurance training did not meaningfully reduce VO₂max improvements overall compared with endurance training alone.

The important nuance: problems may arise when adding resistance training leads to too much endurance work being removed. In other words, the issue may be insufficient aerobic stimulus — not the combination itself.

For MobiGym, this supports a simple principle:

Strength and cardiovascular fitness do not need to compete.

They can be trained together — provided each receives an effective dose.

That is particularly relevant for adults 40+, where preserving muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness are both central to long-term healthspan.

Progress in healthy ageing is rarely captured by one number.

A 12-week supervised resistance-training study in 126 healthy older adults found substantial improvements in functional performance, while muscle capacity, body composition, pain and quality of life changed differently across individuals. Only 46% met the study’s multidomain responder criteria — and some people labelled “non-responders” still improved functional performance.

The practical message: adaptation is asynchronous. Different domains improve at different rates.

That is why MobiGym tracks progress across multiple healthspan measures rather than relying only on body composition, strength or any single score. The goal is to understand the full picture, identify the next priority, and personalize the intervention.

After 50, should you really be lifting light?

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis compared high-intensity resistance training (≥70% of 1RM) with low-to-moderate intensity training in adults aged 50+.

Across 18 randomized controlled trials involving 1,283 participants, higher-intensity training produced greater improvements in lower-body strength, particularly for leg press and leg extension.

What it did not clearly show was an added advantage for bone mineral density, falls, or adverse events.

The practical message is important:

Age alone is not a reason to avoid progressive loading.

That does not mean everyone over 50 should immediately lift heavy. The right load still depends on training history, technique, health status, confidence, and individual capacity.

At MobiGym, we do not prescribe lighter training simply because of chronological age.

We assess the person, establish the baseline, progressively apply the right dose, and reassess what actually changed.

ASSESS → INTERPRET → PRIORITIZE → INTERVENE → REASSESS ↻

Train progressively. Not cautiously by default.

Your VO₂max today matters. But what happens to it over time may matter even more.

A 2026 UK Biobank analysis followed 11,530 adults aged 40–73 who completed two cardiorespiratory fitness assessments, with cardiovascular outcomes tracked over a median of 14 years.

The important finding was not simply that fitter people had lower cardiovascular risk.

It was that the direction of change mattered too.

Annual improvements in estimated VO₂max were associated with lower risk of incident cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality, while declining fitness tracked higher future risk.

This was an observational study, so it does not prove that improving VO₂max alone caused the reduction in risk. But it reinforces an important principle:

Fitness is not just a score. It is a trajectory.

At MobiGym, we establish a baseline, apply the appropriate training stimulus, and reassess using repeatable protocols to understand whether physical capacity is actually improving.
